1monty
Just found a worn track-rod end (after only 14K miles!) which was causing a noise over rough surfaces. Has anybody else suffered failure of these after such a low mileage? As one has gone is it likely the other will soon follow? Is there any alternative unit to the standard that might last longer? alexc
the standard track rod ends should last much longer, don't worry too much, it was probably just a friday afternoon part.
Mook
I agree with Alex, that it's probably been from a bad batch. 14K miles is naff all for a track rod end. The Scirocco we're entering into Scumball has never had new track rod ends (we've got the entire history) and it's 17 years old with over 150K miles on the clock! Golfgirl
I had one of mine replaced a few weeks back under warranty, but the car had done 44k!
1monty
Claire, Did they do the retracking under warranty also?
Golfgirl
I'm not sure, they didn't say whether they had or hadn't. I suppose if they hadn't they would have told me to go and get it done....
1monty
I bet knowing VW that they did not bother to re-track! As a new track-rod end is only £23 inc.vat + 1/2 hour fitting & I hate going to VW I am getting mine done somewhere I can trust & then getting the alignment carried out by Neil Garner.
