Look what i cleaned today

OK.. on the agenda today was a nice MkV Golf GTi. Not done one of these before. very nice car all in all. Will be looking for one when prices fall a little more i think.

anyway. i went a forgot my blooming camera didnt it so i had to use the phone (K800i) so apologies for the poor picture quality.

Before, as you will see its pretty dirty although the paint itself isnt it a terrible condition so not much machine polishing.. just needs a damn good clean

The process (pretty much the same as i recently did to my own S3)

-Wheels cleaned with AG alloys wheel cleaner, brushed and rinsed.

-Whole car sprayed with TFR mix, arches, door and boot shuts, the lot, and rinsed.

-Bonet machine polished with AG 03B compound to remove cat scrtches and bird poo etching.

-Car shampoo'd with AG shampoo and conditioner with AG Autorinse Gloss mixed in and rinsed.

-Clayed with Meguiars Clay.

-Washed again with the above mix, rinsed and dried.

-Waxed with AG Super resin

-Windows cleaned with AG Glass Polish of AG Fast Glass spray

-Rubber treated with AG rubber care.

-Wax removed by hand and buffed at 1800rpm

-Waxed with AG EGP

-Wheels waxed with AG EGP

-Tyres dressed with AG rubber plus

-Interior vacuumed, all interior glass cleaned.

-All leather cleaned and fed with AG leather cleaned and then AG leather cream

-Wax removed by hand and buffed at 1800rpm

The result...

took about 8hrs.

Simple one today although it was pretty messy after the owner having thrashed it round france for the past 2 weeks

(forgot my sodding camera again so you'll have to put up with the phone again)

Wheels cleaned... twice.

Body, Arches, Door shuts cleaned with TFR and scrubbed.

Rear load area cleaned and dressed.

Body shampoo'd and rinsed.

Layer or AG SRP applied.

Rubber dressed, Windows cleaned, Arches dressed, Tyres dressed.

Interior Vacuumed, Surfaces wiped

Leather treated.

Excellent pictures. I wondered one question you mention on some of your write ups that you apply SRP, EGP etc. and remove by hand then "buff @ 1800 RPM".

What pad do you use for this?? What do you use to lubricate the surface if there is no product or residue or product break down??

hi there steelwind.

I use a AG buffing pad. Its White and extremely soft. I normally give the pad a quick spray with Megs Last Touch or Quick Detailer and then do a panel at a time and then wipe with a microfibre if it needs it. I find it gives it that extra bling compared to finishing by hand. That extra bling only lasts about a day but its important when handing back to the customer. The long term finish and durability would be the same by hand.

8 hrs... on which car do you mean? Yes it costs more than a quick wipe with a cloth... but then the results are better than a quick wipe arent they.

oh and in my eyes... it is a main service A mechanical service keeps a car running properly... my service keeps the paint in its absolute best possible condition.

Agree - Too many people only consider the mechanical side of car maintenance. They advertise it with full dealer service history yet the interior is like a skip and the paintwork hammered by car wash machines! I personally reckon that most cars really need a proper machine polish every 2 years in addition to usual hand polishing to keep them prime.

i would say if you machine polish it once and then are carefull with washing and keep it waxed then there is no reason why it would need it again.

A friends P reg MGF. Pretty dirty with some light - mild swirling

The process:

Full wash down with AG products

Machine polish with menzerna Final Finish 106 on a megs polishing pad

Layer of AG Super Resin Polish

Washed again

Stoped about 8:30pm

The lights came in pretty handy

The rest of the process was:

Wash again

Clean glass in and out and dress rubber

Apply Megs #7 glaze

Apply Collinite 476s

Clean interior.

Stunning lesson in what can be achieved here, been following it with interest.

After recently getting hold of a 3 year old metallic black Signum...I started using my acquired skill, with Meguiars, clay bar and stages 2 & 3 (the old 3 for 2 at Halfords..) I'd used a clay bar before and was very happy with results..HOWEVER, swirls live on and I'm beging now to consider investing in a power/orbital polisher thingy.... What should I buy, or what should I budget for, what accessories will I need, how do I use it best, how do I practice, and what pitfalls should I watch out for?

I can't live with my car regardless of the shine I achieve with examples like all the above driving around...

Regarding machine polishing. I use a rotary polisher because i feel i can get better results than with an orbital.

An orbital is probably safer though if your a beginner.

Porter Cable seems to be the most popular choice for an orbital polisher. Yo uhave to buy it from amaerica and get a building site power adapter, pads etc. All in its about £200.

I use a sealey variable speed rotary. It was about £150 i think and goes from 900-2200rpm.

I also use megs pads. 3 different ones. Cutting, Polishing, Finishing.

AS for polish I use Autoglym 03b, Autoglym Paint renovator, Menzerna Power Gloss, Menzerna Final Finish 106.

the trick is to make sure the polish is broken down before finishing. this way you will not get hologramming.

Practice on scrap panels. Its the best way to learn.#

Ok so back at my friends today doing his 911 again... and he has been a very good boy, no fairy liquid, neat alcohol, washing up scrubbers or sponges have been near the car since i last did it. He has washed it a couple of times but promised he rinsed it down first.

So first to clean wheels and TFR the whole car to remove muck and old wax.. then onto the shampoo... and who says Autoglym shampoo doesnt foam up??

Then onto the clay, Megs clay with quick detailer. Not very dirty actually, was quite surprised actually. Washed it again and then dried with a megs water magnet.. which i was very impressed with for the first time i used it.

Anyway.... then i used megs #7 show car glaze followed by 2 layers of collinite 476s via the spit shine method.

Then..... it rained.

(ok some was artificial rain)

Then.. it dried up again and i took it down the road for some pics

Evening. Just had a really long day doing this...

Washed in my usual way.

AG wheel cleaner

AG TFR whole car

AG Shampoo nice and frothy with warm water today :thumb:

Dried with my new sonus Der Wunder drying towel

Then into the garage...

Car was then clayed... again.. not very dirty. Even though i machined this car a few months ago there was some hazeyness and slight swirls, possibly from where the owner wiped it down a few times??? not too sure.. seems i spend half my life chasing swirls these days!

Anyway... my all time favorite product Autoglym Super Resin Polish sorted any odd marks out and left an amazing finish. This product is really under-rated. Yes it leaves dust but just brush or wash it off after.

SRP is so good infact that i found it hard to see much difference when i applied megs #7 glaze. i think im gonna have to move onto Zymol HD Cleanse to see if it gives a better shine than the megs #7 or even the SRP.

anyway... while i was taking some reflection shots after the #7 the owners friend showed up in.... another Aston Martin.

After chatting with the Vantage V8 owner and setting a date to go and sort his car out and also giving it a quick wash i got back to the db9.

2 layers of collinite 476s were applied and then i wheeled it back outside for another wash down and some beading shots.

Some tyre and arch dressing and window polish and a few pics before back into the garage.

The onto the interior. Vacuum, leather wipe down and then leather feed.

Final shots including a great reflection.
