STA3
Hi, I have a 1998 A3 1.8T and have a problem with the driver information display fading, the pixels begin to fade in the corners of the display and this gradually creeps inwards. The problem gets worse when the outside temperature is warm. On a cold day the dispaly at switch on is crisp but as the car warms up it deteriorates. Anyone know of a fix, as now the weather is improving it is virtually invisible after 20 mins. Thanks
S3Bangs
IIRC, there's no proper fix rather than it being changed. Big job and loadsamoney to fix, as the dash has to come off. Its for this reason when I had my S3, I mostly switched it off as its a known issue. If its under warranty get it done, if you have no warranty, I'd say live with it
evotista
It's possible to fix, but only from what i've read around the forums by sourcing a replacement dash panel insert (or pod) as the techies call it. You do not need to uninstall the whole dash to get to the pod....its fairly easily accessible. Since yours is a pre facelift, if you could source a pod from a breakers, that is a pre facelift with DIS then replacement is possible, the main issue will be recoding the new pod to the existing ECU, and the keys to the immobiliser. Re coding may be possible with VAG-COM since its an old A3 - but i'm no expert here...certainly facelift units with immobiliser III are a dealer only recode which equals big money (£150 plus). It all depends how much you miss the DIS and how much effort/money you're prepared to put in to source and then fix the issue....with effort and luck with VAG-com you might be able to fix this for £100....looking at ETOS you probably need the following part number 8L0 919 930 EX or LX...you'll really need to look at your existing pod part number to confirm. If you want further guidance just drop me a PM. HTH
STA3
Thanks for the Reply. I’ve been thinking about trying to fix my existing pod. I have bought a surplus pod from a tdi of Ebay (only £10) and have some electronics knowledge. As the problem seems to get worse at temperature I have been thinking about trying to find the faulty components using electronics freezer spray and using the tdi pod as a parts donor. Do you know how long the wiring looms are to the back of the pod as I’d need to have the display powered to see if it improves when I cool the components. davidhodgkinson
STA3, Mine has recently done the same, but luckily I had mine replaced under warranty. If I had to fix it myself, I'd start by looking at the elastomeric strips which connect the LCD part to the circuit board. I've had quite a few similar problems with other LCD's i've had constructed, a replacement or clean of the strips usually cured it.
Ratmaster
Let me know how you get on STA3 as i currently have the exact same problem in my S3.
STA3
No problem, might not get round to it this weekend though but will post as soon as I've got info. BTW anyone know if disconnecting the pod from the wiring loom will cause any problem re digital mileage readout etc ?
