RedRobin
I've done a Search but not found any matches. I would be grateful for any advice on how best to maintain a very clean windscreen now that the time of year has brought out the kamikaze bugs. I already regularly use my on board screen washers but they don't shift the bug smears. I guess that a wash by hand may be the only answer. Any particular products to be recommended, please ? johnss8
Hi Robin, AutoGlyn glass polish is good but a bit dusty, i would also recommend Sonus glass polish
P_G
Robin, Screenwashers don't work that good on bugs on mine either. A/ slow down so inmpact is less (maybe its just me that has to slow down) B/ AG Fast Glass or if that doesn't work C/ AG Active Insect Remover Both of the latter I use with a kitchen towel to clean the windscreen. Hope this helps!
bpsmith
A good coat or two of glass polish always does it for me. Basically it gives the screen less resistance for the bugs to stick too. I tend to use Newspaper for putting it on though as it works a treat! Just dont use the used newspaper from your fish and chipos though! ;-)
NeilB
Dr OK Wack Screenwash is supposed to be pretty good at removing bugs and muck from the screen.
RedRobin
Cheers, guys . Quite a few different products listed to try out. I ain't going to be curtailing any fun for the sake of bugs though!
Avus_Bub
Red, it's got to be Rain-X every time I've used it for years and stopping bugs sticking to the windscreen is just one of it's properties. It's soooo much eaiser to clean the glass with a coat of Rain-X on. BUB
RedRobin
Ah - I used my first application of Rain-X (I think - It's in the car) a few days ago (white and creamy substance ? - and no!! it's not sticky!! ). I expected better results but I was "making progress" on some very fast roads. I'll re-apply.

RedRobin
....Then it must be another product with "Rain" in the name that I used. Cheers, dazdot .
Avus_Bub
It sounds like you've used the Rain-X glass cleaner, that's white IIRC. The water repellent is clear and has a very high solvent content. You clean the glass, apply the Rain-X with paper towel, work it in well, allow to dry to a haze then splash the glass with water and buff up with a clean paper towel. The glass will be crystal clear. It's top stuff, at speeds of 30mph or more you can get away without using the wipers. On the motorway you sometimes don't even notice that it's raining BUB

Tarmac_Terrorist
Rain-X definitely for me - nothing worse that taking a clean car out for a razz and coming back to find 2 or 3 wasps on the screen in a semi transparent resin like state. All is easily wiped off with rain x applied. I only reapply rain x every 4 weeks too. Seems to last ages.
JonnyGTi
[ QUOTE ] Rain-X definitely for me [/ QUOTE ] Rain-X for me too. Been using it for over 20 years and would'nt use anything else. Passengers are amazed when its raining and I'm travelling at speed (you have to have used it to see this but basically it's like a teflon effect, and the rain just streaks off your windscreen....you don't actually need to use your wipers at speed ) I keep well stocked up when I find some

cw955
Holts Mixra - sprays on as a foam leave it a few seconds and then use the washers gets rid of bugs grease etc. Used it for years and best thing if in a hurry just to get screen clean. Otherwise either Autoglym fast glass or Meguiars NXT Generation Glass Cleaner.

skifly
so - anyone used this stuff with the rain sensitive wipers on a golfy? Thinking it might be the next purchase...
dazdot
[ QUOTE ] so - anyone used this stuff with the rain sensitive wipers on a golfy? [/ QUOTE ] If you mean Rain X, then yes. It is brilliant stuff, doesn't interfere with the sensitivity of the wipers at all. If it did then i would just miss applying it to the part of the screen where the sensor is. RedRobin
Having now tried both Holts foam and Rain-X, the winner by a mile is Meguiar's NXT Generation Glass Cleaner! Absolute magic! Like all Meg's products.

[/ QUOTE ] RR - are you comparing like with like here ? Rain-X is'nt supposed to be a cleaner, it's a rain repellant, ie more like a sealant.....which is what your first post was asking for. I would have thought you could still use Rain X after cleaning your screen with the Megs
RedRobin
Yes, I was probably slightly confused but carrying a spray bottle of Meg's plus their Micro cloths works magic to keep my screen clean. I'm not sure I need Rain-X cos the GTI screen is already OEM sealed.
