nicks3
Has anyone disconnected this pipe from the rear tailpipe yet and if so what were the results? I have looked at it and it doesn't seem to be the normal pull off rubber pipe so am loathe to force it off as I'm not sure if it would go back on easily! Dan32
The pipe makes the exhaust quieter at idle and low speed but if you've ever given the car full throttle, thats when the solenoid flapper, that the vacuum pipe opens and closes, is fully open - in other words you have probably heard the difference already. I never did this mod but from reading other how to's, you need to bung the hose up with something and cable tie it out of harms way to prevent any emissions warning lights. nicks3
It looks easy but I am afraid that once I pull the pipe off I will not be able to put it back on again as it does not simply slide onto a metal pipe, it seems to be fixed much better than that. My pipes are both open at idle.
Splendub
Nicks3, i did this to mine. its easy to complete. you can get the pipe back on or a lot of people just clamp the hose in the middle without even removing it but it has to be tighten quite considerably to stop any air getting through it
UKLooney
Does anyone have a diagram of the arrangement? Pipe sizes? Could hook up a switch inside the car to block/unblock the line... volume on/off switch
jrop
if its the same as on the mk4, then u can install a switch that toggles from the cabin between stock, loud, and quiet mode: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1446352
Ian_G
I'm still trying to get my head around all this exhaust thing so please excuse me for sounding stupid. I really don't like the exhaust drone on the Mk5 R32 between 1800 and 2200rpm and need to solve that. Under throttle noise is fun but tiresome on a long journey. So, does this flapper mod quieten the exhaust noise? Does it cure the low rev drone? Would I be better off going for a miltec which (I think) does away with the flapper anyway? Because it's mechanical, you would probably need to install a solenoid and hook this up to the switch.

The flapper mod actually makes the exhaust sound louder - it works in a similar way to the Aston Martin V8 Vantage exhaust system, in that the exhaust takes a quicker route through the exhaust once the car gets beyond 'X' RPM, because emissions noises are checked below this threshold by the Euro testing bods. Yes, the Milltek is slightly louder from outside the car, but it's actually quieter inside the car - this is beacuse Milltek silencers are built differently and the gases take a more efficient route through the silencer, rather than bouncing around inside the rear box, which is what gives the resonating sound. nicks3
Splendub have you done this to a markV and if so: Does the tube just pull off and re attach Ok? What difference has it made? Cheers,
Ian_G
Thanks for that info Mook. I couldn't justify an AMD Stage 2 for a measly 20bhp but I've now explained to 'er indoors that it gets rid of the low speed resonance that she hates a budget has been agreed :-)
Splendub
Nicks3, Unfortunately not. I've done it to my mark4. I seriously cannot explain how easy it is to do it. I did it and I don't have a clue. If you search for flapper on Vwvortex, it should bring something up for a mk5. My understanding is now the car sound exactly the same on start up and to cruise around in but if you put your foot down, its a lot louder. If you don't like it you can always put it back on. Good luck!

Splendub
I did exactly the same, Pull the pipe off, screw a screw, so to speak down the hole to ensure its completely air tight and then just tie it out of the way. job done
