Please help? Recently if my 2001 210bhp S3 has been left a while, i.e. over 8 hours it takes about 5 minutes of driving for the speedo to start working?? (stays at 0)but more importantly tonight, a warning light did not go off and its the yellow one by the 20mph writing and it looks a bit like a picture of an engine? It's the only symbol not in my handbook? What is it and what does it mean? Am I fcuked?? Please help, my fellow S3ers!?

Where abouts are you? If you scroll up the main page you will see a VAG-COM forum. See if there are any tyresmokers near you with VAG-COM which is a diagnostic tool that will tell you exactly what the problem is. The reason I asked about the smell is that it is one indication that one of the coil packs is on its way out (causes a misfire which upsets the catalytic converter).

Phil came round early yesterday morning, and the logged fault is:

16885 - Vehicle Speed Sensor: Implausible Signal

P0501 - 35-00 - -

Unfortunately, a quick scan in ELSAWin didn't bring up any info about changing the sensor.

I guess that this could be related to the speedo failing to register, too!

Hi Mate,

As my previous S3 had similar problems, here's my take. My speedo would actually be fine but on three or four occasions, while driving, the speedo dropped to zero for a few minutes for no reason at all

At the time, I checked it with VAG COM and the error code was exactly the same as found by Peter for you.

I took it into Audi but as the fault wasn't obvious, though the error code was still there, they couldn't do anything. It happened a few times afterwards so I did some investigations of my own.

Now, (I hope I explain this right..a picture would have been better but I dont have the car anymore) standing in front of the engine bay, just towards the right part of the engine. I'd say to the left of the airbox on the engine block itself below, is a silvery painted little rectangular heatshield thingy. Inside this is the vehicle speed sensor. In my own case, the clip wasn't seated properly. I took it out (quite fiddly) using a tiny flat screwdriver and reseated it.

Fortunately, the problem never occured again. Try this. If it doesn't work, it might be the next sensor along the line, apparently its near the clutch (So the Techies said to me at the time). If this be the case, a visit to your local friendly dealers is on the cards 169144-ok.gif
