doogal1972
I noticed yesterday my car felt a bit odd under acceleration. It feels like the turbo isn't coming in properly and what I'm getting is a very different noise form the turbo at 3000rpm under load. In neutral the turbo sounds normal. I'm not getting the whistle when the car is under load, it's more like the noise of escaping pressure from one of the hoses. Bit peed off to be honest as I only had it serviced last week. I thought they'd check something like the hoses on an inspection service? Are they supposed to do that? Any advice on this would be greatly recieved. Cheers
Paul
first thing to look for is to go round all the hoses and see if you can spot any popped off, split or loose, including under the engine cover. Does the noise give you a clue to its location in the engine bay?
lottiefox
Can you see any of the hoses that may have come loose? They may have even loosened a hose in their service - check the ones that fix right down low, thats where mine once popped off when I had some work done on replacing the OEM hoses with Samco ones. Are all the clips on tight? If the hoses are OK, I'd then check the maf sensor (unplug it and see if it makes a difference to the running of the car) and the DV (Diverter Valve) - a failing DV will make the car sound like its sort of clucking and you won't get the normal turbo noise. Is it under warranty? If not, where in the country are you?
doogal1972
I reckon it could be a split hose or one come off, I'll check at lunchtime and see. I had the MAF sensor changed about 6 months ago so it's probably not that. The noise is like air escaping from somewhere as you can hear it if you have the window open as soon as it gets to 3000rpm. Certainly not a clucking noise, just a load of air escaping. I've had to drive it into work this morning trying to put no load on turbo and changing up before 3000rpm. I'll check it all out at lunch and let you know how I get on. Cheers for your advice and help guys....
Paul
Steel charge pipe to first intercooler is a favourite on remapped cars. having said that, when mine blew, it set the engine fault light and EPC lights and put the car in 2wd. only found out the latter after leaving black tracks from the layby
doogal1972
My S3 is standard and not modded in anyway. Is it an expensive fix if it's pipes, or can I do it myself? I hope it's cheap and I can do it cos after 2 new tyres, an expensive service and a holiday booked to Ibiza, I'm skint!
S3ENVY
Sounds similar to a problem I was having.... ....when coming on boost I had a severe lack of power and could hear the charge air definitely escaping from somewhere. The stealers had a look over it and couldn't find anything wrong, no loose or split hoses. Mine was a little intermittent so I thought it could be the DV not opening and closing properly which was also mentioned to the stealers however they said it was fine. I changed it anyway as it was the original unit and my power is back and no more problems, I didn't have the trademark duck noise though.
Paul
cost depends on what you find. If its just a loose pipe, then its the cost of a jubilee clip or refit it. Dv's are circa £15 from vagparts if its a holed hose its really dependant on what hose. Worse case, if you cant find anything is visit to dealer or specialist like AMD to diagnose and repair. AMD probably the better bet as they can run the car on the RR and be stood right next to the engine bay to hear the escaping air. might be cheaper in the long run, as aposed to paying Audi lots of hours in labour to find it. doogal1972
Is the DV expensive? I really could do without big expenses right now! Great to know you put it in the stealer and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Also, you made the decision yourself to change something after mentioning it to them and them dismissing it. Gotta love Audi stealers eh?! No quacking from my car, it's just gutless!

doogal1972
AMD is on my way to work, Paul. I'll see what I an find today and if there's no problem I can see, I'll have to drop into AMD then. I don't pay stealer labour rates! cheers for your advice guys! doogal1972
Sorted! One of the small hoses had fatigued underneath the engine cover, it was the small one of the two that feeds in directly behind the top of the head (I'm very technincal as you can tell! ). Anyway, I've re attached the hose and all is fine! Thanks for your help guys, saved me a trip to the garage!
