APS R300 Package

I've spoken to APS who have agreed that the work can be carried out in a day but with two technicians working on it. I think they did me a little favour though as I can't leave the car with them so would have to have it carried out in a day.

When I had the Miltek and remap done the car really did sharpen up and I hope the cams will offer more of the same (if not a little more).

From people who have the cams fitted, does it just really increase the top end, or does it improve the torque and midrange performance as well?

I spoke to APS about the torque issues and this is what they said:

"With regard to the low down torque, although the Schrick cams have revised lift and duration, they are only a relatively mild profile cam in comparison to some after market types. The reason for there use is specifically to

avoid any loss of low down torque or smoothness. I am pleased to say that in fact with the revised software on the manual R32's with cams the low down torque is stronger." FIREdevil.gif

Red,

As far as I know, the only real issues APS had with tuning the DSG car was due to issue with remapping.

After a conversation with Ed at APS, he explained that cracking the ECU software these days is like trying to get into an A grade bank vault. It's becoming harder and harder to break the codes and find out where certain function (i.e. where the rev limit lives) are located.

Apparently they managed to locate the information for timings, rev limits etc for the manual map, however the same information is not located in the same area for the DSG map.

However, I'm no technical expert and would suggest that if someone wanted their DSG car remapped, they give Ed a call at APS.

Regarding the R300 conversion, I spoke again with Ed today who stated the following regarding the cams (for those that are interested:

"The cams themselves with increased duration and lift to provide greater power in higher revs. You will notice in lower revs that there is also stronger torque from the engine and also in the mid range. This then translates into increased pull and willingness to rev as the rpms climb. Another point to note it that the engine will rev more strongly and more willingly in high rpms. It is in terms of gains more significant than the 265 as the engine becomes much more flexible. Having spoken to a customer with the R300 conversion he has reported back to say the car is absolutely flying along!".

I'm really looking forward to having this work carried out as along with the short shifter, I reckon it'll really make the car a beast!!

I'm also going to start running the car on Shell V-Max only and see if that makes a difference because I've had to fill up with Asda's petrol recently and my car feels sluggish with it.

here's the shifter part location (highlighted)

note that the airbox, MAF and air intake do not need removing to do the job - but a long ratchet extension, some swearing and patience/care will be required.

There is a tiny split-pin that is essential to the fixing of the shifter part and this is very easily lost - you have been warned !!

Cheers for the pictures Rich!! 169144-ok.gif

I won't be fitting this myself (thankfully) as the guys down at APS are doing for me when they put my cams in.

How do you find it now? I know I've probably asked you before, but how much shorter does it makes the gear changes? I assume it'll be a bit like my Caterhams where the gears snap into place with little effort.

Roll on the 29th!! 169144-ok.giflaugh.gif

no probs Chris 169144-ok.gif

the shifter is adjustable and at the least aggressive setting it removes about 25-30mm of travel in each direction. The side-to-side "waggle" is also reduced, although it doesn't completely cure the awkward 1st>2nd gear change, but it does help a bit.

Although I don't run a R32, I would be interested to hear what APS think about 'tuning'/modding DSG equipped Mk5 R32s.

[/ QUOTE ]

quote from an email that Ed @ APS has sent me :

" Regarding the DSG issues, we have been looking at the software used in the DSG and whilst some other changes need to be made it is too early to say at this stage if there will be any significant differences with DSG tuned R32's over the manual. I expect one here shortly to establish the changes and will be in a better position to comment then. "

So it looks like a proper assessment is needed before going all "gung-ho" with various upgrades on the MkV R32 DSG....
