Calm Chris
Been car less for a few months now, and plans for something special will be on hold to early/ spring 2007. In the mean time I plan to buy a little toy for 4-6 months. Budget £11-£13k and something that's FWD and upwards of 150 bhp per tonne. So from my limited research I could buy:- Renault 182 Clio Trophy or Cup (1 year old) Seat Ibiza Cupra 180 (1000 miles, pre registered) Honda Type R (1 year old) Mini Cooper S (2 years old and just under 150 bhp tonne performance) What else am I missing and what would you buy in the "small and much fun catagory" At the moment I'm drawn towards the Seat, since there's quite a few 06 pre reg demo's within price range, have full warranty and the VW 180 engine is easy to use and tune. The car would be for road play and social outings, I'm unlikely to track it and wouldn't expect to lose more than 15% value for 6 months / 6k miles of ownership
NewNiceMrMe
You'd get a very nice Lancia Delta Integrale for that money - and it would hardly lose a penny in the period you're talking about.
SamD
Got for the Mini. I had a Cooper S for a while and while it is not the most powerful car it is a hoot to drive. Just like a little go-kart.
Problem_Child
Integra type R? Evo seem to like them... Why does it have to be FWD?
v15ben
Clio Trophy for me.. it is the best driver out of the cars listed. None of them will lose a stack of money over the next few months and you'll enjoy any of them
sufu
Good Idea with the lancia, It wont put too much of a dent in the pocket over such a short time, for sheer driving fun though I'd go for the Clio 182 Trophy, if you can handle the depreciation
NewNiceMrMe
Another suggestion... Forget the FWD rubbish and go for a RWD legend that'll not lost 1p!
s4_sat
How about a Lupo GTi? 125bhp 1.6 and 6 speed gearbox. or a mint Corrado 2.9VR6? Both can be had for less than £10k and are both fun.

Cupramax
Get yourself a Leon Cupra R, you'll get a virtually new one for £13k, remap and bobs your uncle, close to 200bhp per ton. Heres my old beastie

Calm Chris
A Lancia would scare me silly with the "snap, pop and bang" factor- too old and I need something with zero service / mtce costs. The FWD over RWD thing is about re-living the driver experience that was so much fun, a la Pug 205 1.9 Had a 1.6 Polo GTi (same engine as Lupo) for 20k miles and it was a hoot, but don't want the same engine in a different shell. The Leon Cupra R is a no, since subject to spec, cost and final kit out it may well be the wife's replacement car (in new model form) next year. BMW's are out, since the 2007 car after this "stop gap" might be one Criteria for spend in the next month is something that will resale quickly, have zero mtce cost, has virtually no risk regarding ownership cost and modest (say £2k) deprecation loss. The Clio's do appeal, but IF a 197 Cup (loads of rumours) is announced, it will knock 182 prices sideways and at present I think the 182 will take a hammering in the intended ownership period. Car will be parked on road (no drive or off street parking here) so big, brash and bold is out until I can move and provide sensible parking and security next year. [/ QUOTE ] Yes but there's the timing chain service at 100k miles, costs the thick end of £2.5k apparently... Maybe next year. Chri5 did you read last months Evo? Plenty of food for thought there! Soapsuds
The 182 wont take a big hit - they will be the last TRUE light compact hatch...... My suggestion is a Megane 225 (ok i'm biased). Get the Phase 2 as the steering is lethally vague on the Phase 1's...... make sure you get the Cup version though. New models via internet broker are £13-14k, so 6 months old £12-13k then v little depreciation. Doubt you will get a GOOD Trophy Clio for £11-12k....... I know the experience you want back - i have found it in my Megane F1...... But you cant get them now.....
ian_m
Chri5!!! The VERY car for you is in the "General Market Place" An 04 Clio 182 for £7800 BARGAIN!!!!
rhyds
[ QUOTE ] I want to relive the days of my 205 1.9 GTi [/ QUOTE ] Simple, why not get a 205 1.9 GTi? You'll end up with some serious change from 10k. Modern hot hatches simply won't compare to the lightweight fun of the classic 80s machine
