markobyrnes
Hi there people.I have been thinking of buying a golf direct from the factory in wolfsburg, Will they allow this? You see in Ireland here we are charged so much in tax and all u get is a basic box with wheels. for instance the 2.0 tdi dsg sporting is 34500 euros without aircon and in germany it's 24000 euros!!! big difference!!! I wonder will they make the car with the steering on the PROPER side :-) You see my girlfriend is German and would be able to bring the car over here without having to pay the v.r.t because if you own your car for 6 months and can prove you have been living in Germany for 6 months paying rent bank details etc etc you avoid v.r.t! so all my girlfriend has to say she is studying and needs the car, which is the case! by the way.so she shows her passport receipt of the car, tax certs, insurance etc and that means I have a vw 2.0 tdi dsg with acon and xtras for 24500 euros. now that's prety good what do ye think? sorry for the long post! Mook
AFAIK, you can't buy direct from the factory, but you can buy a right hand drive car from a VW dealer in German. Can't advise about the import tax and VAT implications in EIRE I'm afraid.
Speedywheels
Contact some of the dealers in Germany who serve the UK Forces based over there. Although they are more used to supplying cars for BFG registration, they are specialists in tax free sales, will know how to get you a properly specced car and take any pain out of the process. markobyrnes
thanks mook at least I now know that I can get a right hand car over there. I do wonder will Ireland and the U.K ever change over to right hand driving? I suppose there is no point really, the system works and if it isn't broke...... It would be great though to get a high spec golf so cheap! how much is the golf in the U.K? the basic 1.4 in ireland is about £21,500 Euros without a/c. That's £13,163.check out www.volkswagen.ie
markobyrnes
thanks speedywheeles I must look into it. But as far as i know once the car is in my girlfriends name for six months then It can be registerd in Ireland without paying v.r.t! Then I can tax and insure it as an irish car. I just wonder would i have trouble selling it? i would make a nice profit selling it and if i did that 3 times i would almost have a golf for free! :-)
Speedywheels
You are correct - 6 months in Germany and then you pay no import tax when you bring it to Ireland. I brought a couple of cars back from Germany when I was in the RAF and had no problems with resale as long as the car was to UK spec. You might need to do a little research to make sure you get this element correct for Ireland.
markobyrnes
why would the car have to be within u.k or irish spec? if you got a higher spec one in Germany wouldn't people jump at the chance to get a car a little cheaper? would I have trouble with a private sale? they have options like supplementary heater and auxiliary heater which are not available here for some reason? If anyone drives the pd engines they know how long it takes to warm up in winter even in irish climate it's a pain in the ass! it takes 12km to get any kind of heat on a cold morning that's very uncomfortable on colder mornings! Speedywheels
You just need to ensure the car you purchase has everything that is available on the standard car in Ireland. Anything over and above that spec is obviously a bonus.
