Simonl
Had a thought this morning about these new proposed guidelines. Ok so i drive a GTI which emits an average 195. But the thing is i only cover 3k miles a years, so my total emmissions will probably be less than a smart car covering 20k miles a year. Do we reckon mileage be a factor then when calculating this gross new tax, becuase if it's all about penalising the worst offenders then it feckin well should be. Chav
Surely it depends how hard you push the throttle too! It's a stupid/annoying tax eh! It should go. We already pay a "fairer" (in prinicple, not the amount!) tax in that you pay per litre of petrol/diesel so it's controlled by economy of car and distance and how you drive. patently
[ QUOTE ] Do we reckon mileage be a factor then when calculating this gross new tax, becuase if it's all about penalising the worst offenders then it feckin well should be. [/ QUOTE ] It's about nothing of the sort. It's about raising the maximum amount of money with the minimum political impact. Nothing more, nothing less. Anything that can be painted as "bad" either is being taxed to the limit or is proposed to be. Cars are currently seen as bad things. Therefore we are getting right royally shafted by those who get driven around in ministerial cars and therefore don't have to pay. Remember: our motoring taxes are set by someone who doesn't have a driving licence. Do you really expect them to be intelligently worked out? All because the money is desperately needed in order to pay [the salaries of the people who have to sit behind desks and think of new taxes in order to pay]* (repeat as necessary) (/rant over, feel better now, until the next tax demand that is)
kaedo
Also don't forget we're taxed a fortune on the fuel as well, which is kind of the system you are describing....
Simonl
But surely a tax that starts at £300 and rises to £3000 is going to send the car market into freefall. I would sell, how can i be paying an extra £1500-£2k a year for a car that does 3000 miles!

collease
LIke i have said in many previous threads i will be kicking up a fuss about this until the w@nkers in government decide either to ditch their own cars in favour of push bikes or they pay fairly like we do. Simonl
[ QUOTE ] Not his problem, LeMan. Not his problem. [/ QUOTE ] Not who's problem! Because i think the car industry, oil industry and manufacturing industry do have the ear of the government (all will suffer). How much tax will this cost westminster? collease
how would this affect motorbikes? Cos i might just swap my car for one and get Mrs C to agree to it due to the decrease in cost

[/ QUOTE ] It still isn't Gordon Brown's problem if the used car market goes into freefall. He doesn't own one (AFAIK) so he loses nothing personally. The motor industry, oil industry etc will carry on because we will still use cars - because we have to. It's just us lot, the mugs who vote and pay taxes, that will suffer. Simonl
If suddenly the bottom falls out of the performance car market or the 4x4 sector, that will damage the car industry, no question. It's where the manufacturers make all their profit. VW will make more on one Toureg than 5 lupos. And if the bottom falls out the used market then of couse it will affect the economy, just in the same way it does when interest rates go up 1/4% (it will actually have more impact TBH) as month on month it will make more difference to peoples outgoings. Confidence will weaken as everyone is going to have to suddenly find an awfull lot of cash to fnd this. Think how much extra £100 a month will be to Mr £20k a year with 2-3 kids in his Toyota 2.3. collease
or an extra £100 a month for Mr £12000 a year.

I bet they'll stage it in at first and then do a rapid 'congestion charge' style increase. For once i think some anarchy might be the only way forward. Petrol protest anyone!?! (a common tax and licence points dodge especially by the rich) If it was really a pollution tax and they would tax the airlines but the airline company bosses have too much clout to upset so they won't. Same with power stations and industry the main contributors. All political parties talk the same rubbish on these things. Theres so many conspiracies in my view against motorists because there an easy target that may complain but never do anything about it (in the UK anyway) by all polititions to get what they want. ie more money. mb
I really can't see this sort of scheme being introduced retroactively (though GB has started trying retroactive introduction of laws eg trusts) so perversley it might increase the value of second hand cars - but kill sales of new ones apart from the very rich or extreme enthusiast who either won't mind or will pay anyway - of course civil servants will all keep their jags etc. as they will fall into the 3rd category & have someone else pay for them !
