Whats good is it has the same spec as I am going to order so nice to see it first. Wallachie Posted September 6, 2006 Report Share Posted September 6, 2006 Black looks good, but I don't like that cheap tacky looking shiny grey difuser thingy on the rear bumper. I think misano red, sprint blue or orange are the colours to have out of the standard range, but I would need to have it in a colour that isn't available in the normal A3 range, to help distinguish it from an S-line. I think it will do well. The BMW 1 series looks like a shoe anyway, I hate them. Theres no contest in terms of style and looks. Give me the S3 anyday. martin275 Posted September 6, 2006 Report Share Posted September 6, 2006 Each to their own, I think our 130 makes the A3/S3 look as dull as they are to drive I don;t put any faith in Autoexpress reviews either, but I don't blame you for hanging onto some good news. AE have different requirements to most people and cars being good to drive isn't at the top of their list imho. I trust mags like Autocar and particularly Evo, it will be interesting to see what Evo make of it. Don't get me wrong, I can see why Audiphiles would love it, but it's too expensive, under engined and not good enough to drive. I hope the RS4 wasn't a 1 off... IME they tend to have a more balanced, objective and less biased viewpoint than a lot of the UK motoring press. The reviews are often a lot more thorough too. The problem with a lot of German cars is that they are set up for mainland European roads, which can make them less than ideal for us. I would only use other peoples opinions as a guide anyway. The reason that alot of British mags don't like Audis as much as you do is that they're biased. That said, I wouldn't trust a word of an Auto Express review - they probably haven't even driven it. I would wait to see what evo have to say about it. Maybe I'm naive, but I do not believe evo have ever published a biased review - they just say it as they see it. Lets not forget that there have been a great many positive reviews of Audis in the UK press over the years too, but in my opinion there is a bias towards one of their main competitors and it is evident to varying degrees in several UK publications, but absent (from what I have seen) from those elsewhere. Without trying to sound conceited (difficult in text) I believe I am not alone in this view. If the reviews in car mags here are even half as bent as those in the high end audio press then they're not worth the paper they're printed on. Yes I love Audis but I'm not biased toward them; I've grown up around cars (and car enthusiasts), have been privileged enough to drive lots of nice things over the years and Audi's blend of qualities is the best for me. garcon magnifique Posted September 8, 2006 Report Share Posted September 8, 2006 Fair enough. Lexus' mission statement is "The pursuit of perfection" - so not even they think they're perfect... yet. I guess I don't read the motoring press that widely. What I do read (or watch) I think gives Audi a fair deal. There is an obsession in the motoring press at large with handling and performance at a level the average punter will barely ever experience - which is why alot of performance oriented publications (like Performance Car and then Evo) have historically preferred the rear-drive, 50/50 balanced set up of BMWs over Audi's front or 4WD. You have to admit the handling of the vast majority of Audis between the ur-Quattro and the current RS4 has been a little - ahem - insipid. It's also worth remembering that until fairly recently, Audi were very much the poor relation playing catch up to the 'big two' - BMW and Merc. Even the most critical motoring publications now treat the 3 marques as equals. Just a theory here, but do the mainland European publications treat Audi differently because they don't have the same hang ups over 'premium' marques as we do? i.e. Audis, Mercs and BMWs are treated as just another car, until you get into the high end models. Finally, I don't think it's possible to 'love' a marque without being a little bit biased. But I don't see that as a bad thing as long as you can admit it and be open about it (and it's hardly a secret here on TSN that you're a pretty big Audi fan... ) Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

We drove our old 1.8 T to Austria or Italy half a dozen times - perhaps its just that particular 500 miles that are lumpy? French motorways are what we need to emulate here - its worth the tolls. One interesting comment was when they were talking about hierarchy on the roads in Germany, they said that it went BMW, Audi and then Porsche, so I think the Europeans are just as biased as us.
