Sat Nav DVD - Sprechen Sie Deutsch ?

Picked up my .:R32 on Friday but haven't been able to use the Sat Nav. Apparently the car turned up with a German language disc installed so I was promised it would be in by Saturday for collection. Today I hear that my car wasn't the only one affected and now there's no stock of English versions at the supplier so I'm going to have to wait. Dealer was phoning around to see if anyone had one in stock but has anyone else been similarly affected ?

If it's the DVD-based MFD2 then you shouldn't need a specific language version, at least as far as I understand it. There's a language selection screen somewhere in the menu system that should let you change it from German to English.

This information is based purely on what I've gathered from discussion of the MFD2 and the screenshots I've seen of it -- I don't have it myself although I am planning on getting one from eBay at some point. So I could be completely wrong on this, but perhaps someone else that's actually got the system can say for sure?

When I picked my car up it had no disc, they have to order it seperately apparently and the language was set as German for the nav, which I obviously couldn't use without a disc. Anyway, long story short, I rang up VW UK and asked them about it, they rang the dealers direct and kicked some ass. I got my disc 2 days later 169144-ok.gif

There are 2 things here, the language the MFD is operating in & the map CD/DVD.

To navigate in England you will need the UK CD/DVD but you can have the MFD talk to you in whatever language you choose.

Are the menus in German - is so you will need to change the language to English on my MFD the sequence is something like - press the Navi button then choose "Einstellungen" & press enter (right button on mine) which takes you into setup, then choose "Sparche wählen", enter then choose English Imperial (or your preferred option), enter, then you will seem "loading" or some such & you will be in English !

given all the cost-cutting stories it would make sense if it was one DVD for all Euro countries.

also thinking about the way the system works how can the disc be controlling all the language for instructions or menu etc ? surely the disc contains mostly mapping data - would need a lot of DVD space to control all the permutations of directions in all the different languages.

Sorry, mine is CD based so that may well be a red herring re the DVD, you will need a DVD that covers the country you are in & also to set the MFD to the language of your choice, I can set my MFD to a range of langugages whilst only having the UK CD in it.

I think (from its behaviour when changing language) that it loads the language from the CD rather than carries them all "in the box" but I am not sure about it.

Been told today that the DVD will be here tomorrow. His words were you'd have been ok if you wanted to go to Berlin but not much use for driving around Dundee. This makes it sound as though it's a UK map, nothing to do with language. Still think I've been fed with dung.gif but hopefully it'll be resolved tomorrow. Interesting that nobody on TSN who has recently picked up cars in the last couple of weeks has had similar problems so I'm beginning to think it's just Bovine Excretus.

Just suspect that you've been unlucky or there is a real error with the DVD disc? Would have thought that in DVD format, all languages would be there and that it'd just be a case of setting the correct language at set-up stage ?? Are you sure it's the wrong disc and not just pilot error at set-up? confused.gif

well it's definitely not pilot error on my behalf because I've never seen a disk. It wasn't supplied because I was told it was the wrong one. However, the mystery has deepened further today. I've been told the dealers get the disks from a central VAG Sales support centre in UK. They don't have the correct disk but there is a premier version that you can buy for around £200 but is not normally supplied with new cars (presumably they get an inferior version). I have no further detail but have been told that the dealer has managed to get the premier version and I will get it installed tomorrow afternoon when I have time to go and pick it up. Still all sounds a bit strange to me - isn't there anyone on TSN who has inside knowledge and would know if I'm just getting fed dung.gif ????

That makes sense in a way - unit starts off life in German & without a DVD can't have English loaded onto it !

DVD looks to be about 170 here & covers all of Europe, I imagine the VW one will have VW garages added to it (my CD does) maybe the "premier" one covers all of Europe rather than just the UK ?

The standard DVD map disc supplied with the car includes the whole of Europe and does include markings for VW garages. It also allows you the ability to have the display and announcements in different European languages. There is only one part number and AFAIK there is no concept of a standard version or a premier version. AFAIK this map is the same map disc that would be supplied if you bought your car in Belgium, Germany, France e.t.c.

The DVD map discs are not supplied with the car but do come from VAG in Milton Keynes.

The saga continues. I'm no further forward as the disk they tried today didn't work

Sorry to hear that. I am more than happy to bring my car along, let you test my DVD in your system and see whether it's anything sinister? Tell Scott I've volunteered if need be ?? 169144-ok.gif

Thanks for the offer TP. I have full confidence the thing works, just needs the disk ! The other thing I noticed yesterday was both CD disks that the dealer tried were GB and NI maps, not Europe. I just don't understand the problem, especially when I see you can order them from bluespot direct. Scott says he has 3 people in a similar predicament as me but nobody else on here has had a problem in picking up their cars recently. Looks like I will have to remain patient and in truth it's not stopping me enjoying the car.

VW Part Number on my DVD map disc is 3CO 051 859. It says for use with RNS MFD DVD and RN S2DVD . Map version is labelled Digital Road Map Europe(V1).

The disc is produced for VW by TeleAtlas.

It has the following country maps on it

Andorra, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Gibraltar, Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Lichenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Holland, Norway, Austria, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Sweden, Switzeralnd, Spain, Czech Republic and the Vatican State. It also includes all the languages for these countries.

The only thing it does'nt do which is a real pain in the neck - is include the TMC codes for the UK. So until VW pull their finger out sportifs2.gif and commission TeleAtlas to produce a DVD map disc with UK TMC codes on it, your TMC in the UK won't work. TMC codes are included for the rest of Europe.

Glad to hear that you are enjoying the R32 Speedywheels - the R32 is great fun particularly on some of the roads you have in Scotland.
