dazrose
Hi all. I recently bought a 2001 2.0 golf. Damn good car. The only problem (at the mo) is that the zapper for the central locking seems to work intermittently. I've changed the batteries and also I've heard that keeping it too near to a mobile phone can reset the chip or transponder. Whatever. Any similar experiences or advice out there please? s4dreamer
One of our zappers packed up unexpectedly and we ended up taking it to the dealers to have it reset (free, fortunately). They did mutter something about them occasionally losing their codes You say the zapper works intermittently. Do you mean sometimes it does work and sometimes it doesn't (without changing anything) ? If so, it could be a fault with the zapper itself - not transmitting properly. Does the distance between you and the car have any effect ? If it's under warranty, I'd be inclined to mention it to the service dept at your local dealership to see what they say.
dazrose
The distance doesn't make any difference, I can walk right round the car trying and it doesn't work, drive the car for 5 mins and hey presto, it's working again. Drive another 5 mins and b*****ks, it's not working again. Fortunately I can unlock and deadlock the car from the passenger side but I don't know if this arms the alarm. s4dreamer
Sounds like there's either a fault in the transponder unit or the receiver on the car. I assume you have two transponder keys. If you're seeing the same fault with both, then I would guess that the receiver in the car is faulty, in which case, it would be worth taking the car into VW to have it checked. If it's only one of the keys, then I would think it likely that the key's transponder unit is at fault. If you lock the car using the key, I'm pretty sure it deadlocks, but does not set the alarm (if you have a factory-fit alarm).
foxy
The golf has a rolling code when locking/unlocking, to avoid hijacking by scanners, etc. Frequent pressing of the remote when out of range can cause a discrepancy between the immobilizer and the key. You can do a reset yourself - procedure is in the owner manual. However, I think you problem lies in the key - a dry join or cracked PCB. If you have a spare key - try this and see if the problem disappears. New keys are expensive at the dealer - look for a second hand or New one on eBay.......reckon on £25+
