Pincher
One of MrsP's friends wants to get her son a PS2 for Christmas but is worried about how long it will take for new games to stopped being available due to the introduction of the PS3. When exactly is the PS3 out in the UK and will it be long before PS2 games stop?
Snail
PS3 wont be out till March, but Sony are very good at supporting old consoles. IIRC they were still supporting the PS1 2 years after the PS2 came out.
Pincher
Cheers for the info about the PS3. But will new PS2 games come out once the PS3 is out though?
Snail
Sony is usually very good at supporting old platforms. Im sure theres a couple of years left in the PS2 yet. Even if there isn't, the PS2 has a HUGE back catalog, plenty to keep kids amused
Chelsea Mick
It's highly unlikely the developers will continue to produce games for the PS2 once the PS3 finally hits the market. But as Snail says, there are plenty of titles to be getting on with for now.
Chav
The PS2 will still be supported for a couple of years yet - it's got a massive user base, and most people don't upgrade to the latest consoles for several years after release. We last released a PS1 game just 18 months ago - selling well in certain parts of the world! A lot of new AAA titles are obviously written for a specific platform/base-spec however, which often means they can't be released on earlier machines due to performance/memory/storage etc. The latest-greatest AAA title buyer is typically a very different person to your pre-latest-gen game buyer also. e.g. Nintendo console owners like gameplay, colour and fun as a rule. I think a PS2 is still a perfect pressie for a kid. Many great titles with great gameplay.
