Hi Guys

We have got an Arcserve backup system in place - my PC backups up from 6 client agents on servers.

On one of the servers it backups every night, I get the following errors

[ QUOTE ]

E3719

Unable to write to media. (MEDIA=F-HEROUK-MON-05/02/07 [s/N: 1000013], EC=UNRECOVERABLE DATA ERROR)

E8535

Failed to receive data from the client agent. (ADDRESS=172.19.0.200 (RENSHAW008 ( 172.19.0.200 )), EC=10053, COMMAND=80)

E3719

Unable to write to media. (MEDIA=F-HEROUK-MON-05/02/07 [s/N: 1000013], EC=UNRECOVERABLE DATA ERROR)

E3712

Unable to close session. (EC=UNRECOVERABLE DATA ERROR)

[/ QUOTE ]

Now, I am sure its not the media (tried new media last night) and it can't be the drive - all the other servers backup ok..

What can it be!!!

Cheers

Chaz

Urgh! Arcserve! That was the bane of my life until I tamed it. Unfortunately, I'm still on an old version, so I know one day I'll have to bite the bullet and upgrade it, with all the pain that promises. crazy.gif

What version of Arcserve? What agent exactly? Open File or Regular Win32 agent?

I found that I finally laid a lot of my random crashes to bed by creating a local user called "Arcserve" (for argument's sake) on the Arcserve server, and making it a member of Administrators. I logged on as that user and set up an Outlook profile for email alerting. After installing Arcserve and MSDE, I changed the service accounts to be my Arcserve user and restarted them.

Then I created a domain user account with the same name and password, and added it to the it Domain Administrators group. I logged into all servers as that user to create a local profile on them. I installed the agent to run as that user account.

I created the backup job while logged in as the ASSERVER\Arcserve account. Then in my backup job, when submitting, I set the security for each remote server to DOMAIN\Arcserve and the relevant password.

I've got some unix agents, which behave prefectly, so I knew it was somehow permissions related, and that trick seems to have fixed it. I even frigged the Exchange Agent to work in 'bricks level' against Exchange 2003.

Touch wood, I only get bad backups if an agent dies, for example I know that if I haven't given the DOMAIN\Arcserve user full rights to all Exchange Public Folders, it dies trying to back up any it can see but not read the contents of.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Arcserve is pooo but it was here when I arrived! So I have to put up with it. I am pretty sure its not the media, it's different media every night... and its not the drive - I can run backups in the day of files and have no issues...

Its very weird.. I have had 'Dylan' from arcserve support in India looking at it and he reckons the firmware is too high on the tape drive...

Its not permissions - if I backup the server in question part by part it seems to be fine and backups everything it should do!

There's a patch that addresses this. Have a look at QO52534 on CA's site.

Also, make sure the Agent is the same version as the Server. There's a timeout value somewhere in the registry too. It may be that Arcserve is waiting too long for the data. Have you run a chkdsk against the drives in question?
