Waylander
Planning to buy one in the next couple of months Criteria I figured were: -wireless enabled -14/15" screen -ideally Core 2 Duo (T5500 or above) -1GB Ram -decent GFx -Decent battery life Ideally want to spend around £600 I went into PC World just to have a look at some of the various screens and k/b layouts and was suprised by the differences. I like the Sony/Compac/HP screens. Really didn't like the Tosh screens. Sadly there was no Acer to see. I think Scooby posted on a similar subject not too long ago so I will check there also but some pointers would be helpful
drpellypo
I've got a Vaio and it gets abused like you wouldn't believe - but it's still going strong. The monitor is one of the best you can get (supposedly, anyway) and it's v v quick. Tosh's aren't that great. Have you thought about mac? Waylander
yes - just to swiftly dismiss it. No real reason...other than software base from PC etc
rottenbend
The mac will run XP or Vista just as well as a PC now... The operating system (OSX) has an extension called Boot Camp which allows you to boot into Windows. You can run both operating systems at the same time and even have windows applications run on your Mac desktop if you install Parallels. Take a look here You need >£750 to get a MacBook though
drpellypo
What he said. If I could turn back time, I would have bought a mac instead of the Sony.
Waylander
is that girly white case an obligate requirement though?
SamD
[ QUOTE ] is that girly white case an obligate requirement though? [/ QUOTE ] Nope, you can get a black one Or a nice Aluminium one if you get a MacBook Pro, but those are seriously pricey

HP/Compaq are OK, but I don't rate the screen brightness. Eitherway, first thing to do, is to remove all power saving settings, ie LAN card, Wireless, screen brightness settings and CPU stepping bollox. ashleyadam
IBM excellent warranty that goes with machine not owner, we have a few T43/T42/R50e all excellent. Only issue is keys that damage from time to time and IBM just send out new keypad that is replaced with 3 or 4 screws.

CarMad
Well I'd say I don't agree with that AT ALL ! Most laptops know if they are connected to the mains or battery and you make the settings depending on those.
Gren
I see what you've meant. Yep, mine maxxes out everything if you're hooked up to the mains and has 4 battery profiles depending on what you're up to. As CarMad says it detects what power I'm using automatically
cruiser647
The silly HP/Compaq things we have at work have power saving on the LAN and wireless cards! The previous gen ones had power saving on the CPU speed - even plugged in, if set to laptop/portable! The screens are dim as well. Hence I remove all that rubbish first!
