charding370
Anybody happen to know how to get the headlamp washers to stay out? I heard there is a maintenance mode, maybe switch off ignition when they are spraying? I need to fit a new cover (as it was knicked) and there is no way to fit it without the washer jet assembly being in the wash position (out) rather than retracted. Gti_Fly
mk5 I presume?? there is no way of making a mk4 headlamp washers stay out, as they are sprung shut. On a mk4 you can fit the new cover by yanking the headlamp washer out, and holding it with one hand, and sticking the cover on with the other hand
charding370
It's a Mk V, I tried pulling it gently but it doesn't move. But if as you say its srung shut then this is the only way otherwise if you activate the washer mode as soon as its finished it will spring shut. Perhaps I need to be a bit more aggressive with it? Gti_Fly
might be easier if there's two of you, one in the car operating the washer, the other ready to catch the washer before it pops back in. could be fun trying to soak the poor guy that gets to grab the washer
macdaddyR32
it'd be like that game where you hit stuff with a hammer when it pops out the machine , you know the one at the arcades,
charding370
How do VW dealerships replace MK V covers then - sensible answers please?
mikemod
My dealer replaced a cover and did exactly what is said above. He stood at the front of the car and grabbed the arm when it was extended while I operated the lever inside. At least it was a sunny day and he didn't get too wet
Calm Chris
With the Mk4 R32, just pull thye things and they will move forward. They are on a spring, so when you have an inch or so of the arm out clamp a pair of mole grips on the arm to keep the arm out while you work on the washer cover. It does not seem to move at all unless the spring used is stronger than the MK IV?
mikemod
Yea, was a MKV. You need to get someone to operate the washers from inside and then grab the arm when it is extended to prevent it from returning.

mikemod
Just grabbed it with his hand. The replacement cover I got wasn't a good colour match so I ended up fixing the old one and replacing it myself. Just grab the metal bit of the arm when it is extended. You will get wet
mb
Although it sounds a bit brutal if you allow the washer to descend slowly then the molegrips should be OK, although I would put a duster around the washer first to protect the bumper. [/ QUOTE ] As I have never seen these operate, does the washer unit protrude a lot and at a sharp angle like 45 degress when it washes? Sounds like quite a few inches. charding370
That's very useful. Perhaps thats how it went missing, the car park people may have used it and it hit the car in front and knocked the cover off.
