Along with all the shootings, stabbings etc. This kind of thing will just get worse until this government starts to dish out real punishment for crimes.

In the mean time, thank goodness that people are being fined for speeding, using mobile phones, eating in their cars, parking and displaying plackards in parliament square.

All laws that really do make you feel so much safer sportifs2.gif

Don't try to turn this around A/S. There's no need for sarcasm. I was just highlighting the fact that this government ( not the police ) have got the laws and justice all arse about face, thats all.

Gun & Knife crime, together with any other kind of violent attack should be made a priority over the more trivial stuff like persecuting the motorist and getting our money.

Build more prisons FFS, then we can turn the screw on these thugs and let them know that they WILL be punished. Instead of having to lean on a brush for 2 weeks and wearing a tag ROLLEY~14.GIF Surely as an officer, there must be times when you feel it is YOUR hands that are tied. crazy.gif

In this case I wasnt being sarcastic at all!!!! grin.gif

Your post makes it seem like the other things just dont matter - if someone hit one of your friends/loved ones because they were on the phone - you would be calling for severe punishment 169144-ok.gif

However - Yes, I agree (feck did I just say that grin.gif) sometimes I wonder why I bother when we (the police) go through all of the processes and drawn out procedures to bring someone to justice and the courts treat it like a joke!!!

Unfortunately until the courts system is overhauled it will remain the same frown.gif

Yes, And I agree too. grin.gif However I would expect the "Due care and attention" failure would carry the stiffer of the penalties than the already ludicrous punishment of £60? AND 3 penalty points for using a phone. A fine... OK, but the points in my view are over the top. I do feel that the latest run of fines and points for minor misdemeanours like eating at the wheel and such like are just the nanny state gone mad.

I see a future filled with Automated cars with no gear lever, no music device, no “Visual” Satnav, no manual controls for the heater etc. etc. etc. I can even see the day when passengers will live under the threat of prosecution if they so much as speak to the driver. shocked.gif

The whole point of my original post was to highlight the problems we all face, not only as drivers ( this is a driving forum after all ) but as Joe public innocently going about his business in the street. How can we feel safe out there when individuals such as the ones described in the M1 story, will more than likely get very light punishment for their violent crimes. As you so rightly point out in your reference to the courts system. Meanwhile the innocent and forgetful of us are punished ( to a much higher level of inconvenience and hardship IMO ) by fines and licence points, for a much less sinister “Crime”.

And before you ask.. No, I have not been done recently tongue.gif

Hey…. Ian….. I think we just “Opened dialogue” grin.gif

I don't think that the new penalties for using mobiles or eating while driving (I didn't know about that one) are OTT at all. The point is that they significantly interfere with a driver being in control.

The guys who did the road rage event on the M1 haven't done so without potential penalties - They just haven't been caught yet. Perhaps they'll get caught and recieve a lot more than just 3pts+£60, or perhaps they'll get away with it. The law gets broken every day, some get caught and others don't - Breaking laws is just human nature.

Errm ummmm blush.gifwink.gif Maybe!

Eating at the wheel would probably be seen to be "not being in control" which can carry a £30 fine (no points) or a summons to court - which granted may become points.

These people on the M1 - its a difficult one - no one has let them get away with it as of yet, and as others have mentioned, I doubt this is your normal road rage - there will be a lot of work going on in the back ground on this - who knows what punishment, if any will be dished out 169144-ok.gif

Mixit - the thing is - having less laws doesn't make less crime, does it? If the Police gave speeders, people on their phones, people displaying signs outside parliment etc a break, then it wouldn't stop people stabbing/shooting/killing people. I'm sure if a Police officer was faced with a call to catch a criminal while he was writing out a speeding ticket, he would drop it and leave.
