pingpongpo
Got my DAS next week. Hopefully the weather will improve by then..... I also found the hazard perception to be shite. Surely the sooner you spot the hazard the more points you should get? I found myself clicking as soon as I saw it and then clicking 2 seconds later just to be sure it registered my 'click' 35/35 on the questions as well!! Scotty
Today's the first day of my DAS and the terrible weather has gone and it's glorious. Good luck Simon
Ollie_A3
Good luck for the course Scotty I did my CBT on Sunday, was a really good day, apart from the fact rain was coming down sideways pretty much all day! but if that didnt put me off, i dont think anything will!! I did the CBT on a Kawasaki ER-5(500cc), which was cool, although also daunting as the biggest bike i had been on in the past was a 125 motocrosser......and that was about 6/7 years ago!! Oh well, roll on DAS course, i cant wait!! Scotty
So my first day started and ended in glorious sunshine but in the middle it was dreadful. I couldn't even see the speedo coz it was so dark and so wet. We was out riding all day .... apart from the 1.5 hours where my bike's clutch went! When the recovery guys turned up they managed to fix it. It was a fault on the bike which should have been picked up during the PDI. The clutch adjustment nuts are meant to be one each side of the holder but two were on one side meaning that the clutch wasn't working properly and then some hill starts made it worse. The fixed my bike and made the same adjustment to the other bike that was out with us. Apparently they've had 6 clutches go on these bikes and they've all less than 1,000 miles! I think the dealer will be getting a call tomorrow. Riding in the wet wasn't as bad as I was fearing. I thought i'd have to tootle along but we still maintained a good speed. Due to the breakdown we got back late and hit rush hour. I was then instructed to filter through the traffic and I certainly wasn't expecting that on my first day. The delay also meant we didn't complete the whole day (just the U-turns to do) so tomorrow we start early with them and then straight off the 125's and onto the 500's for a bit of practise before hitting the roads. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow. It'll be nice to ride without having the throttle nailed on the stop on all the derestricted roads. Lee_
Sounds like a good start, the 500's are much nicer to ride. The 125 I rode for mine was the most unstable bike I've ever ridden, felt like riding a razorblade.
Ollie_A3
Didnt think you would be filtering on your first day either! How did you find it? any scares? I wish my course date would hurry up and come round!!
jonm51168
good luck to all on your tests and do get a bike when you pass gents. oh filtering is a perk of the job just watch out for car drivers who can not hear or see you no mater what bike your on, even an sp1 with full race exhaust which could have woken the dead.keep em peeled there out to get you.all the best again
Hudson
Nice to get a bit of filtering in day one, it's what you will be doing all the time when you pass. All i seem to do now is filter, i keep hearing about the joy or riding on the open road and the twisties but on my daily commute i just hit standing traffic, still enjoy it though. Good luck. Mort
ah yes - Filtering.... I do about 20 miles of it every day....shite... I had a perfect display of how not to do it the other day.... A lunatic on a 900 Hornet passed me at about 70mph+ (no exageration) between two lines of cars.... his speed was such that he only just missed the cars in front of me (I was filtering too), then he had a close shave with a further car.... then a car changed lanes in front of him.... at the speed he was doing he had no chance.... When he hit the back of the car he flew over it whilst his bike shot about 10 feet in the air... I pulled over to help - he was OK - it later transpired he had no licence and would rather avoid the law if that was Ok with me... Never seen anything like it.... Anyway.... filtering.... take it easy.
Scotty
I had a great day today. We had about 20 mins on the pad doing U-turns on the 125s (weight on left foot, relaxed right knee, tip bike over more, etc etc) all which made it a lot easier than just a little rear brake. I then got put on a 500 and did the same whilst the girl on my course fell off the 125. She still can't do it or even get it on the stand so she's not stuck with a 125. The weather was poor (i.e. pi55ing down all day!) but with all the gear on it didn't bother me at all. Today I really learnt that my instructor really wants me to "make progress". My mind was in being "good" and passing my test" but now I understand that over taking and filtering and generally making progress whenever possible is all the norm when on a bike. I was also holding back waiting for the girl on the 125. I now know to ignore her and just ride for myself. Tomorrow should be a lot more fun as I'll (sensibly) just be going for it. We had a bit of fun on the way back using most of the revs and getting some proper speed on Doesn't it feel a lot faster when you're on a bike!! Really enjoying it now and I feel much more at home on the 500. The transition was barely noticable from the 125 and I had been a bit wary about it but the 500 feels a lot more planted and in many ways easier. My failing today was I put a foot down during two U turns out of the 20 or so we did but I'm not too worried about that as I know I'll get it licked tomorrow. I'm doing my test in Chingford and not Letchworth as I originally was told so all the road word is around there and in and out of Epping Forest. It's quite hilly so I feel I'm really learning and not getting anything easy. Roll on tomorrow. (sorry we don't have a motorbike icon!)

Mort
No licence is definately naughty but having no insurance isnt illegal here. Personal injury is covered by the government and there is no legal requirement to have 3rd party insurance as in the UK. Its a good scheme which keeps the cost of insurance down in general as claim amounts are strictly limited. I am not sure I would like to go chasing some scum bag who colides with me though to get him to pay for damages to me car etc though....

Scotty
Today was blinding! It started with the dozy bint arriving at the training centre and being told to feck off. Her hubby called the centre last night about her being dropped down a licence class and slated the instructor and said her failings were all his fault! I've now ridden a bike for 4 days and can do all he has taught. She's been riding for 12months+ and still can't get her road position right or get a 125 on the stand! It turns out her CBT was completed in 3.5 hours!!!! Anyway she's gone so now it's one on one. I immediately noticed how much more progress we could make. I was subconciously holding back for her but now it's power on and look for the opportunities. I had a great day and we stayed dry ...although inside my water proof trousers (they did say heavy rain) it got quite damp and clammy!! I know I'm not allowed passengers but Betty Swollocks was on board with me I did a mock test and failed on a couple of stupid things but they're sorted in my head now. Another couple of foot downs today (out of about 25 hilly U turns) meant more practise at the end of the day. I reckon I've got it nailed now...I hope. He got me to do U turns standing up on the pegs and without using the rear brake. Normal U turns are so easy in comparison. He also got me to flap my elbows like a chicken. That makes it really fecking difficult but when you do it without flapping then again it seems really simple. So I'm all set for tomorrow. It's a mid/late morning test so not much time left to sort out an niggles. I'm relaxed and confident but not overly so my fingers are crossed. p.s. Rain doesn't phase me at all after this week. I'll take what ever comes

Scotty
I'm a dozy fecker! Had a practise this morning and I banged off at least 20 U-turns with confidence and not a single problem. During the test I had to do just one on exactly the same bit of road I'd practised on and I dabbed my foot down. What a tw4t! Retest booked for the 18th Let's hope Simon has a better result. whisky
Sorry to hear that Scotty, I found U-turns and emergency stopping without skidding the most worrying parts of the test. You make one mistake and its game over, unfair really.
Mort
Scotty - the test aint easy - (I know that - I failed my 1st). Get the U turn sorted and keep the practice up for the 18th. It'll be worth it..... keep the faith mate
Chelsea Mick
Back luck Scotty.... 18th for a re-test eh? Still time for passing, buying a bike and turning up at the next Essex meet then I could ride down to Brentwood and meet you there with a quick little blast up the A12

It'll be worth it..... keep the faith mate [/ QUOTE ] Practice?!? I don't have a bike to practise on. My bike CV now is : 1 day CBT 3.5 days DAS including test I'm sure more familiarisation etc would have meant I got 21 out of 21 U-turns right today instead of 20/21 but I wonder how many other bad habits I would have picked up. The retest is on Monday 18th. I get back from Le Mans in the early hours of the same day! So I'll have about 4 hours to remember everything and get on top of it. It is a real pi55er failing on something that I've done countless times without a problem but I guess that counts for nothing when you're in the exam. I feel gutted for the instructor coz he gave me more than enough ability to do it but I just didn't deliver when it mattered. Mick - Not one person in my family has had anything negative to say about me doing my bike licence. I was expecting the normal stuff but nothing. HOWEVER my Mrs did make a comment tonight about not getting a bike. It seems she has absolutely no probs with me doing the training/getting the licence but me becoming a bike owner is a no no. Time will tell but I don't see that happening in the short term and to be honest with a 2 year old I don't get much time for it anyway. I wonder where Simon is? Hopefully getting pished celebrating a pass
