Scotty
I just had a pleasant surprise!! I got an online insurance quote for a SV650S (although I'd go for the Sport). With it parked off road, NO security devices, no experience etc etc Bennetts camr back with £192!! Im amazed its so cheap! I'm getting realy tempted! Scotty
Well done mate! How was it? Mine's on Monday and I'm more concerned about that than the actual riding! A guy on my CBT got 72/75 on the hazard perception!
Lee_
I found the theory test the hardest part of the lot, the hazard perception penalises you for recognising a hazard too early. You have to wait for it to develop. Good luck with your tests.
Ollie_A3
It was a pain in the arse! i got 31/35 on the questions, which was sort of disappointing as i was getting 35 on all of the practice ones! never mind a pass is a pass! i had 59 on the hazard perception, and i also got the dreaded red cross where you loose 5 marks for clicking too many times! although i was pissed off with that as i was being genuine when i was clicking! I added i was very disappointed with the whole hazard perception thing! But i dont mind, like i say, i passed so on with the next stage now! ive booked my CBT for a week sunday, then my DAS is mid June. I cant wait! i was way more nervous about the bloody theory than i am about the rest of it! Ive been looking at potential bikes and since they were released ive wanted an R6, yes i know it maybe a bit extreme for a first bike but i will be extra careful and also try and get on a track tuition day to help me along. Believe it or not, the R6(im looking at an 04/05plate BTW)is the only bike in its class i can get a reasonable insurance quote on. Im 22, and after completing the DAS, my quote is coming in at under 600quid, admittedly its with a high excess, but thats my choice. Any other bikes in this class, like the GSX-R, Ninja 636 or cbr 600rr are all well over 1500 quid! It baffles me! even a normal cbr600, sv650 or other bikes not classed as real fast bikes are still a lot more than the r6! I thought it was a fluke, but ive been checking the quote every few weeks and even trying a new quote and the price is correct! Great news for me but i just cant get my head around how they calculate the cost! Weird! The reason ive decided to go with bikes is it is something ive been planning for years, but since selling my previous car (Stage 1 VX220 Turbo), and getting my A3, i miss getting a great rush from driving and a bike seems like the ideal resolution as well as keeping a normal car for everyday use! Anyway, im waffling on, so good luck with your theory matey, im sure you will fly it!
Scotty
I'm 38 and the SV650 quote for me was only £190. I wonder what price an R6 would be.... I'll take a look at it doesn't make sense for it to be cheaper!
Ollie_A3
Its Bennetts im getting the quotes with, they have been then best for sensible quotes for me so far. Where have you been trying mate?
Scotty
Errrm an R6 would cist me £725 for the insurance!!
Scotty
Bennetts also.
Ollie_A3
Random eh, although like i say, ive been checking the quote is valid and also doing them same type of quote on the same bike just with a different name at my address and its been the same or thereabouts each time! What bike are you after fella?
Scotty
Well my mate got an R6 as soon as he'd passed the test and had three close ones due to lack of experiebce, I'm pondering doing the sensible thing and getting a bike to learn to ride on (e.g. post test). The two that seem best so far are the SV650 (Sport) and the ER-6f. Keep it for a bit and then move on. ...although at the moment I'm still telling myself I won't get any bike! Ollie_A3
No you have to get one!! I saw a SV650s last night in yellow flying past when i was on the bench outside a pub - it looked and sounded really good!(Aftermarket exhaust) When i got back i checked details on it and its supposedly good for 0-60 in just under 4 seconds and 0-100 in 9 seconds or just under!! Hardly slow is it, ill have to check the stats and figures on the R6 now as well. The only thing i dont want to do is buy something like an SV, then within 6 months or a year wish i had gone for the R6...as i intend keeping whichever bike i get for a few years at least. mmmm decisions decisions! [/ QUOTE ] It seems we're coming at it from opposite ends. I'm thinking that to go in at a (semi)sensible level will give me more chance of making it to a bigger bike later. i.e. If I go straight for it then I down have confidence it will last long. It's like sticking a 17 year old in a Porsche GT3 the day he gets his licence Then again I'm a middle aged father who doesn't feel as invincible as I once did p.s. If it's a SV650S then it will have to have full fairings and the seat pod.
Scotty
Ollie - it's this sort of thing that stops me getting straight on a big bike. "This graphic demonstration was placed at the Stockholm Motorcycle Fair by the Swedish Police and Road Safety Department. The sign above the display also noted that the rider had only recently obtained his license. All three involved (two in car and rider) were killed instantly. The Honda rider was travelling at such a "very high speed", his reaction time was not sufficient enough to avoid this accident. Swedish Police estimate a speed of ~250 KM/h (155mph) before the bike hit the slow moving car side-on at an intersection. At that speed, they predicted that the rider's reaction time (once the vehicle came into view) wasn't sufficient enough for him to even apply the brakes. The car had two passengers and the bike rider was found INSIDE the car with them. The Volkswagen actually flipped over from the force of impact and landed 10 feet from where the collision took place. At 250 KM (155 mph) the operator is travelling at 227 feet per second. With normal reaction time to SEE-DECIDE-REACT of 1.6 seconds the above operator would have travelled over 363 feet while making a decision on what actions to take. In this incident the Swedish police indicate that no actions were taken." I know it's not the size of the bike but the rider on it but I think a smaller bike keeps it more rational
Ollie_A3
god thats shocking! My other half works in Road Accident Stats for the Police and she said the only fatalities for this area this year have been bikers, 2 of which were yesterday! [ QUOTE ] p.s. If it's a SV650S then it will have to have full fairings and the seat pod. [/ QUOTE ] I couldnt agree more with that, and at moment SM motorcycles are doing the sv with the fairing and all for £4100 brand new! Tempting or what!! R32Ash
Re: the bike in the crash pics: I'd be suprised if it was doing circa 155mph to be honest, despite what the police said. Unless I'm mistaken it's 'only' a VFR 400 - not that they're mega slow. I do think the idea of starting out with something like an SV650 is a good idea. You get a much greater perception of speed on something like that, so will be more aware of how quick you're approaching corners/hazards - they come up suprisingly quickly on 600cc+ sports bikes. Ollie_A3
Ok, so after spending an hour or 2 at SW Superbikes, i think im going to more than likely go with the SV650 Sport. It can be picked up for £3995 brand spanking, and thats o% for 3 years!! Ive managed to find insurance quotes that are 200quid cheaper for the sv than an R6, and if i bought an R6, it would have been second hand anyway, so financially and sensibly it seems the better thing to do! Plus having had a real good look over the SV today, sitting on it etc, it feels and looks like a real decent bit of kit! Scotty - time for you to get one too! Scotty
I know that if I walk into a shop I'll be coming home with one! Theory on Monday. Direct Access a week after and then I'll ponder...and look in bike shops. Definately not before! p.s. £3995 is a good deal! I've seen the 0% but have you also seen insurance for 8 trackdays for only £125! IF (big IF) I get a bike I'll definately be doing track days. They're the best way to really learn what your vehicle does and how it behaves. p.s. I'm gonna call Suzuki and claim commision if you buy one! p.p.s. If you want cheaper then consider an 2nd hand SV650S. Many have full fairings fitted and a seat pod should be cheap and easy

Scotty
Theory : 35/35 Hazard : 60/75 i.e. 80% I reckon the missing 20% was coz I was too quick for it
