Badge Power

I have been talking to some of my work colleagues about badge and brand power.

We ended up writing down a list of manufactures and putting them in order of preference on badge alone.

This lead me to wonder what the TSN massive would say about this. We only used brands that were in our car park so the list is as follows

BMW

Audi

VW

Skoda

Volvo

Ford

Jaguar

Seat

Fiat

Subaru

Vauxhall

What order on badge alone would you put these in. We were not looking at build quality or looks etc just the name of the manufature to guide you. 169144-ok.gif

Your list is about right, if it's based on the cars in your car park, but the Subaru would be a bit higher up.

Not sure why you've got Jag below Ford, esp. as Jag is supposed to be Ford's luxury brand.

Dont ask me thats were it ended up and to be honest Vauxhall was last in my list anyway grin.gif the old people in the office out number the young jump.gif

Hi, I think that original list puts Subaru about right for a real cross-section of buyers.

Perhaps rated by the performance community but, for everyone else, big scoop, big wing, big exhaust, big stickes, gold wheels = chavcar and they won't look beyond that and certainly wouldn't be seen in one.

Like Subaru, Jaguar might still go low on the basis of their fourth/fifth owner profile. I guess Ford rates on anonymity, whilst Vauxhall bottoms out because they are primarily still seen as fleet cars with rock-bottom resale.

So for a buch of old men and women (my office) they have not done to bad really. Obviously there are a few differences but not to bad at all. I will have to ask them the same question with as many brands as possible and see what happens.

Thanks to thoughs that answered. 169144-ok.gif

As above badge power is subjective. If you mean clear identity then thats different.

My List and reasons.

BMW - Not everyone likes them but everyone knows who they are and what they stand for.

Audi - Improved massively as a brand but future direction and what the currently stand for is unclear.

Vauxhall - Starting to make some great looking cars that are cheap and reliable. Flashy no know their market yes.

Ford - Ditto for Ford thought they run hot and cold on the performance models.

Skoda - Cheap and cheerful... or are they with prices drifting upwards.

Subaru - Not to everyone taste but a very clear identity for many with the link to rallying.

VW - Tough one, they were the peoples car company now they are going upmarket, but isn't Audi already there. Plus service is miles behind for the cost of the cars.

Jaguar - What can I say, they used to know what they stood for, now I haven't got a clue. Its make or break for Jag with the new motor.

Seat - Thinks where looking promising for Seat but now they seem to have a range of cars that are almost identical. Clear on what they are erm no.

Volvo - They seem to be a bit lost at the minute, who really knows what they are selling, safety maybe but what about the rest of the car....

Fiat - They are on the up but from a very low position.

Yes I am bored. coffee.gif

Ford, Jaguar and Vauxhall all near the bottom. Not sure why some have Jaguar so high up. That brand was cheapened the very instant Ford took over. My reasoning - neither Ford nor Vauxhall are hardly prestigious and both are losing money like no tomorrow.

I don't think I've ever thought about what a car company "stands for". They sell cars. You like them or not. Done deal confused.gif

What kind of dumb ass reasoning is that???

Ferrari has been fully owned and is still part owned by Fiat (hardly an exemplar when it comes to prestige or money making). Ignoring the selling of tat raised elsewhere, does that make Ferrari a cheapo badge deserving of a lower place than Seat & Skoda ROLLEY~14.GIF

If that's the case then why isn't everyone's beloved Audi cheapened by being associated with Seat (purveyor of mangy old Fiats until reasonably recently)?

What about the influence of VW on Lambo/Bentley/Bugatti given that VW hasn't been a stellar money maker.

Oh, and I noticed you omitted Aston - did they have a crap image 3 months ago when still owned by Ford confused.gif

I really can't see why (apart from VAG loyalty) people are oh so keen to put Seat, Skoda and even Fiat above Ford/GM. VAG internals do not a prestige badge/brand make - I can honestly say hand on heart that I don't know one soul who would consider Seat/Skoda to be above Ford/GM, even with their addiction to the Co car market and the problems that brings image wise. Close to being level - quite possibly but definitely not superior.

At the end of the day, who gives a flying one as to what the badge is, as long as the motor it is plonked on is a good one & does the business for whoever chooses it.

Take it easy - each to their own - live and let live, etc.

I've owned Fords for 20 years prior to my current car so I'm fairly well qualified to place Ford in a list. In "my opinion" they would be towards the bottom of "my" current list. That is what the OP asked - yes?

I simply included Jaguar (a wholly owned company?) since I believe their X-Type has all the traits of a Mondeo, including it's depriciation. To me, this is part of what defines a badge.

Would have put Jaguar on top,but their recent models are pretty poor-rebadged Rovers.

[/ QUOTE ]

Eh? How'd you figure that one?

look at at a S type jaguar-compare it to the Rover saloons-look very similar.

Not really sure either mate confused.gif
