On My D3, Occasionally when I stop after a journey, there is a really loud grinding / whining / pumping noise that comes from the rear of the car.

It sounds like a compressor or something - its quite loud

Any idea if this is normal or is it warranty time!!

cheers

Mark

I dont think that you have a fault. My D3 A8 4.0 Tdi does exactly the same thing. Mine makes the noise for a very short time if you apply the parking brake as normnal but, if you leave the car in park on the transmission selector and do not put the parking brake on and then switch off it whirs away to itself for quite a long time. My brother had an S type Jaguar with a similar system and that made a similar noise. Inside the car with the windows closed you hardly notice it on my car but standing outside it is just as you descibe if the parking brake has not been put on.

If it is the parking brake then you can easily check by opening the door and applying and releasing the parking break. If it sounds the same or similar then you know it is that.

I believe every 1,000km the car self adjusts to compensate for the pad thickness, so this is normal, however if it does it all the time…...

My other thought could be the air suspension. the car levels its self even when the engine is not running. You can feel it if you park it on a hill and stick your foot on the floor and stand up and sit back down again, it compensates for the wait change after a few seconds. When you lock the car you can see the car settle to the floor and a sound a bit like air breaks (but quieter).

If it is noisy during any of this then it might be air suspension related. I would think putting the car into lift mode might recreate the problem as it would need to start the compressor.

Anyhow if it is under warranty best let the alleged experts work it out.

Thanks for the replies - it only happens occasionally - once every few weeks so the pad thickness adjuster sounds favourite - I will try the other ideas as well to make sure

Since the car is under warranty and has an 'alleged' 5 year service plan, when I stick it in for service I'll mention it - Audi seem VERY keen to replace everything they can under warranty - not that I mind smile.gif

Will also mention that the aircon takes ages to cool the car down in hot weather as well
