Risky
Interesting to discover that the tyre sidewall projects out from the alloy to protect it. Unfortunately not enough to protect it from a lump of Cornish granite when avoid a white van flying round the corner of a narrow lane towards us. Anyway the question is whether the tyre needs replacing now as it has had a bite taken out of it by the wheel. I suppose most garages are going to say yes when they see it and I hate to think the price of a tyre.
Dave
Without doubt!.. yes. You don't want to be going down a motorway at 100mph and have a blow out
techieboy
Sidewall damage = As Dave said, get it replaced (and maybe the other side as well if it's more than half worn). Edit: I guess tyre wear won't be an issue if it's on the S5
D1MAC
If it's just taken a smallish chunk out of the sidewall protector ridge and hasn't got to the main body of the tyre then you might be ok. Had something similar for about 7 or 8k now and no issues whatsoever.
Ben
Ditto, Sidewall protectors are exactly that and there for the rim. If it has taken a chunk out of the sidewall then you'd be daft to risk it for the sake of a couple of hundred quid. Cheers Ben
Risky
I think it's the sidewall protector but it's a fair bite - I'll post a pic but I think I'll take it to the garage in the village and see what he says. He has a fairly good rep.
Risky
Hmm, I've taken some pics - looking at it magnified it looks nasty.

Yahoo
Change it!!! Looks like there is damage to the tyre lip inside the rim. The crack on the second image looks a bit dodgy too. It wouldn't pass an MOT, so I wouldn't risk it on the road, not worth it imo.
Risky
yeah I'm heading that way. Can I get away with one type given it has 800 miles on the clock. (front tyre had the hit).
techieboy
Yeah, no worries just replacing the one tyre. If the car had done 5k, that would be different.
Risky
Hey anyone know the tail of the tyre code so I can call up. It's is 255/35R19 Michelin Pilot Sport but is it 96(Y) or ZR, I though the former.
