Merlot
Interesting thoughts. Its true that BMW is making amazing inroads into petrol mpg, shame Audi and Merc are not as good.
Sc00t
I bought a 330i for one of my staff last year, its a manual and he get's nothing like 38 mpg , more like 26/30, mind you i'm paying for the fuel too. I'll take the 335D with that sumptious torque , in fact i would have the 335D over a 335i anyday. The engine once remapped is perfect for uk roads and not getting out of the bloody car for 500 miles to fill up is just a bonus
gizze
The new 330i only came out from September Scott and the combined mpg has risen by nearly 25%. I agree that the 335d would be the better car for doing miles in, but I would have a hard time justifying £4000 more for it, and not everyone does 20-30k miles a year like us. Sc00t
Keep the car for over a year and resale alone would make the difference up , but i do know what you mean.
gizze
I think as people start to realise just how economical these new cars are there will be more demand for them used.
Booster
You are dead right Gizze. It will lead to a greater disparity between those petrol cars without Efficent Dynamics and those with it. My dad's 320i SE Auto with ED is returning figures that I would expect to see from a diesel!!

[/ QUOTE ] That 6 series 635D I test drove on A/B wet roads returned 28 MPG My RS4 ain't far off with 26 MPG at those speeds............. economy coupled with that awful ride........... and 60K.......... [/ QUOTE ] Remember the 6 can only be had with runflats but the 5 on 19" wheels is on normal tyres - having owned both I can say that the difference is massive. I struggle to believe that with similar speeds and acceleration that the 635d and RS4 will return similar mpg but that's your experience.
gizze
I would never have considered the 330i before now, to me it always seemed like the nothing car, nearly as expensive as the 335i with nealry 100bhp down and doing the same mpg, slower than a 330d and 10mpg down, and no where near the 335 in performance or economy. But now it is the same power as the 335d, around the same mpg, it has the lighter engine up front so handles slightly better, and it has that glorious straight six sound coming from it. What more could you want?? Oh, of course £4000 cheaper too, it just gets better. Now this would be my order.... gizze
And of course you then think, if I am going to spend that much I may as well spend £1500 more and get the 335i!

Irnbrukid
It's only £2,000 cheaper like for like auto v auto and £3,500 if the 330i is manual. But with the fuel consumption getting very similar it's going to be hard choice from now on. Think new would still be the diesel but 2nd hand petrol (due to bigger first year depreciation). It was a guy that works for me part time that is in to remapping big time. Hes spent 15 K on kit and gets all the maps from a firm that does most of the dealers in the UK. Also his prices are a lot cheaper than a lot of firms charge for the same thing. if anyone wants his number PM me and I will give it to you. Or better still go to ebay and type r-tech UK and read his feedback. and as a web site W*W.BIGBHP.COM
