crazy.gif what the funk - here

" The limit will be set at 30kph, a little under 19 mph...The speed checks, the first of their kind in the winter sports world, begin in Andermatt today after a series of small-scale trials. They will be introduced across Switzerland, to include well-known resorts such as St Moritz, Zermatt, Davos and Verbier. Josef Dahinden, a spokesman for Andermatt, said there were many accidents on the slopes as a result of skiers going too fast. "

crazy.gif The question is, how the funk are you supposed to know how fast you are going? Are they going to provide all skiers with complementary GPS speedometers?

grin.gif If this does start happening at other resorts I foresee a great business in ski speed camera detectors and jammers yelrotflmao.gif

We usually try to find those timing gates with the big LED screens to display the passing speed but as it usually just two deeply indented ski tracks (like on a ski jump) it’s hard to get close to that on a board. Nice fresh snow, early morning, wide piste and new wax should get us close to that speed.

grin.gif like the garage door openers for cars that 'happen' to block laser speed traps tongue.gif

grin.gif 71mph is fecking quick - I was bricking it at 55mph (GPS 87.9kph) - on freestyle skis yelrotflmao.gif

I was on "all terrain ski's" - Salomon Crossmax 10's I think.

I think you will seriously struggle to crack 100mph without more specialist equipment and specifically designed slopes Simon..... The pro boys with all the kit "only" get to circa 125mph.

Taken from wiki:

"Speed skiers regularly exceed 200 km/h (125 mph), which is even faster than the terminal velocity of a free-falling skydiver; about 193 km/h (120 mph) in the belly-to-earth position.

Speed skiers wear dense foam fairings on their lower legs and aerodynamic helmets to increase streamlining. Their ski suits are made from air-tight latex or have a polyurethane coating to cut wind resistance, with only a mandatory back protector to give some protection in the case of a crash.

The special skis used must be 2.4 meters (94.5 inches) long and maximum 10cm wide with a maximum weight of 15 kg for the pair. ski boots are attached to the skis by bindings. The ski poles are bent to shape around the body, and must be a minimum of 1 m long.

Speed skiing is practiced on steep, specially designed courses one kilometer long. There are approximately thirty of these courses world-wide, many of them at high altitudes to minimize air resistance."

Yep;

Mate of mine has done just over 80 down the ladies downhill in Courcheval and he thinks that is about as fast as you are going to get without going on the flying K at Les Arcs. Putting on the "slick" suits opens up a whole new area of danger; when you fall in "normal" ski stuff, it is fairly rough and so you slow down when you hit the white stuff unless it's very steep - remember I've done these speeds on fairly shallow slopes (Wide red runs). Putting on the slippy suits you do not stop.

A brit girl was killed when she slipped over at the top of the flying K (Before she started to descend) and fell about 900m (partly down a mogul slope); she did not stop partly because she had taken off her "over suit" and so just had her speed suit on.

The world record is arond 250kmh (155mph) which scares the dung.gif outa me. If I ever get there (and I feel it's fairly doubtfull) I'll stop at 100. I'm mad, but not that mad.......

Be carefull(ish) out there people.....
