RedRobin
^^^^ Exactly, Phil . The GTI is such a great allrounder whereas the Evo X might be very exciting but too hardcore.
billy2shots
Of course we shouldnt get caught up in 0-60's etc and a point i made was the Gti doesnt have to be the fastest because of its other good points. Although i still think it should improve from the mkV. My reason for posting was about VW being lazy. Putting a very slightly changed 3.2 v6 into the MkV R32 was lazy when the rivals were going about it in other ways. Now it seems they are going to do what they should have done 3 years ago and put in a lighter more economical 2litre turbo (S3?). Maybe VW are being ultra safe these days and watching what happens from other brands, but given the companys size and budget i would like to seem them setting the new trends and not following them. (Audi/vw dsg aside) Its a little like the RS4 V M3, Audi got in first with their V8. They could have waited for the M3 to see how that did but they had the balls to try it. So come on VW give us that 2.5 V5 Turbo or a 2 liter Twin chager.

As I said earlier in the thread, in my view VW have missed a trick by not moving on from the 0-62 time of 7.2... it's not about being the fastest, it's about moving your game on. Snoopy
VW has never moved the game on when it comes to performance figure stats with the GTI in its entire 30+ years. There has always been faster more powerful models in its segment, it has always been about the all round package.
Muppetboy
 The MkV was deffo quicker than the MkIV, does that not qualify of moving your game one?
Snoopy
The mk4 had way less power than rivals. The mk4 by its end was only 20bhp less than the mk5 iirc (its not a car i liked) . Mk6 has 10bhp more than mk5? Remember SEAT had the cupra R out back then 225bhp 1.8T and others had higher power too but VW stuck a 200PS unit in the mk5. So less than rivals. (the SEAT was even quicker round the topgear track on the first GTI test they did) The GTI has never been about power. The mk1 rivals had more power as did the mk2's the mk3s well everyone had more power lol, mk4 went limp:). Mk5 was a better alrounder but still down on power. People are obsessed by power numbers and saying thats what moves the game on it doesn't:), the GTI was never a power number model, It was about a good all round engineered package. If anything imo VW has gone slightly backwards on what the GTI name really stood for. Over the years they have catering for looks with spoilers and other useless gadgets that the marketing men want on the car that have no engineering reason to be there. There was no wings or spoilers added to the mk1 that did not have a good engineering reason to be there and imo thats how a GTI should be rather than a posh badged astra/Escort/Focus VXR/GTE/ST/XR3/RS etc. Its funny but every time i hear someone say more power and talk 0-60 times i see the advert for the mk2 golf GTI in my head. An old magazine advert were a red golf GTI mk2 is sitting at a set of traffic lights with a white astra GTE next to him. The GTI driver is sitting calm and collected just going about his day and the GTE driver is all wound up ready to race to prove he has more power and is faster. I cannot remember the wording exact but remember the jist. That advert sums up to me the meening of GTI.. Muppetboy
Not bothered about rivals too much, I just think that a new model should move on in all aspects whether it be quality, consumption or power... I agree it's about the whole package, the GTI does this superbly and beats the rest hands down- hence why I bought one. But to get me to part with the best part of £23k and out of my MkV I need the whole package to move on - and the performance has not. The anni had 230 horses, at least they could have matched that! Oh well VW's loss, I for one will not be ordering one anyway...
Snoopy
Its funny but i can remember 1983 and alot of people were saying exactly what you were saying about the then new mk2 golf GTI. It had the same bhp as the mk1 and was heavier and was over 1 seconds slower to 60. Was far quieter and refined (similar to mk6 over mk5). Looked similar to the mk1. Funny thing is it did not seem to do too bad because of it. Can you imagine what would have been said if we had the internet back then before anyone had even drove it. Muppetboy
I don't doubt the MkVI will sell sh*t loads, to either newbies or existing owners trading up. If I'm going to be working in central London permanently then I'm going to be getting a weekend toy (911, TVR etc) BUT I'm just not sure if I can part with my GTI, might have to keep it. Just can't see me letting go...
Tarmac_Terrorist
With the country falling into recession, I think sales of most cars will be pretty poor for at least the next 18 months. More niche models such as GTI's and the like will probably be hit harder than most. I'd be interested to know the percentage of GTI's which are company cars (or car allowance financed) v's those privately purchased. I guess there will always be movement in the company car market place. I'd happily sell my GTI for a 911 / TVR Muppetboy !
Muppetboy
I'd happily sell my GTI for a 911 / TVR Muppetboy ! 2nd hand obviously! Much prefer 997's to 996's but it's a heck of a lot of cash to put into a car! Perhaps a Sagaris is a good compromise...

There is no real excuse to allow anything more. Im amazed the ecomentalists have not jumped on this big time.

RedRobin
.... I saw a new black BMW Series-1 the other day with rear 'privacy glass' - It looked liked a van!
Mook
That's why they call it the bread van Privacy glass is a matter of personal taste - I've got it on my S4 and like it - but that black GTI above has been photo'd to look it's absolute best. I'm still reserving judgement for when I see a Mk6 GTI in the flesh. For now, they look blander than beige paint
davyk31
That black car in the pic makes it look so like a Mk V that non informed car watchers will not know the difference. Yes we know the front is different but we are enthusiasts. Come on VW, if you want cash out of us all in these tough times you may need to put in more effort. silentandy
If this is basically a MK5.5 could you just attach the front and rear bumpers to a MKV?
Mook
Probably, although I'm sure Mr VW will tell you the car is completely new and reworked...
stooH
The front looks way too boring, I think the MkV looks much more agressive with the big grille. Really don't like the parallel lines from the Scirocco.
