bazza_g
I think I remember a few people on here going for 'normal' tyres instead of more runflats when the time came for replacement. Which 18" tyres should I go for on 335d M-Sport Saloon? Do I need to watch out for anything? Does it screw up the tyre pressure monitors? Cheers
allanon_1980
I dont know about 18's but I changed to non runflats on my 19's and havent looked back since. It has absolutely transformed my car. Bought the tyre puncture from BMW but thankfully havent had to use it yet. Had no problems with the tyre pressure sensors. Cagey
TPS work off the ABS, so there should be no issues. Thinking of going the 'standard' route too when the time comes. PS2's seem to be fairly popular, although I may go for Falken 452's. Mind you, ANYTHING will be better than the Bridgestone RFT's I have now. Yahoo
I have also changed the 19s on my 335i. I changed for Vredestien Ultrac Sessantas - I would argue are pound note for pound note the best tyre on the market. The tpms is fine and the ride on my msport setup is fantastic. Absolutely transformed the car - it has gone from "not too bad considering its on run flats" to a perfect blend of handling, poise and refinement. Highly recommended. CarMad
My rears need changing soon and I think I will go for non-runflats, prob SP2's.
Biscuits
I had Goodyear Assys on the 535d (19's)... they were ace and not too bad on the pocket. When the Mrs' 130i needs new tyres wil definatly ditch the runflays, they are utter sh1te..
bazza_g
cool, cheers gents - have had a nose about and some people appear to have issues with getting fitting centres to swap runflats for 'normal' tyres? Surely the car isn't designed for runflats???
CarMad
I spoke to my local kwik fit, they have always done my company cars and have been excellent in the past. They said it was no problem and it was just the sensors that can be a problem on some models. Other than that they would do it but I'd probably go somewhere cheaper if I was paying. I think some don't want you to sue them if you have a problem later and try and blame them for it IMO.

a18eem
Hi all , I am having trouble with keeping the 335i in a straight line,it twiches , and it seems to jump or bounce if it goes over the smallest of dips in the road. Is this the result of having run flats ? Did anyone else have the same trouble and did it get sorted when changing to normal tyres?.. anybody out there...hello... help ! Hi ya, This is exactly the issue you get with run-flat tyres, they don't give, so small bumps and lumps (cats eyes esp.) break the contact with the road triggering the DSC/TCS or if it's switched off, lighting up the rear tyres I swapped the run-flats on the 130i for a 'Ring trip and it transformed the car, but got rid as Mrs B won't stop curbing, so the original 18's with run-flats are back on... totally dredfull, but hassle free if she gets a puncture

davyk31
You need to change all 4 tyres if you ditch runflats. Mixing runflats on one axle with standard on the other produces wierd handling characteristics.
bazza_g
you'd have to be certifiable to only swap one axle off runflats
davyk31
you'd have to be certifiable to only swap one axle off runflats I agree ............... but it has been done. Given that most people only need to change 2 tyres at any time they are tempted to go away from runflats and then run out the runflats on the other axle. Not a good plan . gizze
I am going back to PS2's on all my cars, they are so much better than any other tyre imho. Anyone with a 130i, 335d/i or M3 shouldn't look at anything else imho, these cars just excel on them!!
CarMad
I quite like them on mine but they are the ZP runflats, probably going to change to normal PS2's. Although despite the words above I might just do the rears and then the fronts, not decided yet.
gizze
Although despite the words above I might just do the rears and then the fronts, not decided yet. Don't!!! I had 48 hours in my 320d with just the rears done and it was lethal.
davyk31
Agree........ mixing standard tyres with runflats is a lethal combination .......... don't do it!!!

Not sure how much a stealer will skin you for one, but here is one on eBay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BMW-E46-M3-flat-tyre-repair-kit-and-air-compressor_W0QQitemZ260293162201QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item260293162201&_trkparms=72%3A1301|39%3A1|66%3A2|65%3A12|240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

Tarmac_Terrorist
I thought I read a long time ago that ditching runflats in favour of conventional tyres can have insurance implications. I guess this is if you're involved in an accident where it was deemed that a tyre failure was to blame. Isn't insurance based upon the standard features of the car? I guess run flats could be considered a safety feature - almost like disconnecting abs / air bags etc.
shark_90
I'm not sure about that, otherwise surely insurance companies would have managed to outlaw budget ditchfinders that find their way onto people's cars? My first A4 had some on when I bought it and they were actually lethal in the wet. Just like driving on ice.
