Ipod/itunes question

So I bought a new pc, downloaded itunes, plugged in my ipod to stick some more tunes on it and it wouldn't have it!

It told me that my ipod is already associated with another version on itunes (on my old pc presumably) and therefore I couldn't do anything. To move forward, it said I would have to lose all the songs currently on my ipod.

Surely I should be able to put the songs currently on my ipod in to the new itunes on my new PC?

Nope, its not the way iTunes works.

You have to copy ALL of the music from your old PC to your new one, then drag it into the library, then plug in your iPod and it'll then wipe all the "old" music associated with your "old" library and write all your "new" music onto it.

It's Apple's way of stopping you writing all your tunes to your iPod, then lending your iPod to your mate and he/she copies all the songs onto his/her iTunes library.

It's a right royal pain in the a*se, although there's probably some freeware widget you can download to make it easier...
