Sponge
I've just turned on my 360 to play some GoW 2 and there was an update. I downloaded it without giving it a second thought and it turns out it's the new dashboard, etc. I'm just choosing my Avatar now. So if you haven't already, go get it! Dave
Mine's being fixed at the moment.. 3 red lights of doom. Microsoft were really good about it though.. it must be nearly 3 years old but there was no question about sending it back at their expense. And a months free X-Box live. RacingRed
Couldn't care less about the Wii Mii's (Sorry, 'Avatars') and I have yet to see one that doesn't look like it just stepped out of a commercial for GAP. There are however some interesting new features, but am I the only one who feels the flashy new layout is actually more cluttered and complicated than the blade system was? burble
The only interesting thing to me in this update is the ability to copy games to the hard drive so no more noisy DVD going all the time. The Mii stuff I couldn't give a toss about.
tom_hargreaves
Couldn't care less about the Wii Mii's (Sorry, 'Avatars') and I have yet to see one that doesn't look like it just stepped out of a commercial for GAP. There are however some interesting new features, but am I the only one who feels the flashy new layout is actually more cluttered and complicated than the blade system was? I couldn't agree with you more. The NXE is a load of toss. It's no faster than the old dashboard, it's far more confusing and things are categorised really stupidly. All my old (and better) themes are now redundant because half of the picture is cut off. I hate all this avatar stuff, if I wanted that I wouldn't have sold my Wii. The friends list is a joke. Installing games takes nearly 12 minutes and each game takes up around 8GB. Apart from the noise reduction, although I couldn't hear my 360 before anyway, there's no faster load time i've noticed or increased performance. The 8 way chat is brilliant. I thought the latest iteration of the old dashboard was fine. Had no problems with it whatsoever, and it was far better for customisation and was quicker to navigate. The old one was instant with anything to do with the marketplace or downloads, the NXE is riddled with 10 second waits for everything like on the Wii marketplace. So it doesn't feel "Constantly Connected" like it used to do. The friends list though with all the avatars is stupid, it's like a very irritating version of the Mii channel, you can only see about 4 friends at once as opposed to 10 on the older one. So you're constantly scrolling through, with no indication of where the friend you're looking for is in your list. It's a bit like the XMB on PS3 when you bring up the new guide, it's just as slow to load as the old blade system was when it doesn't need to be. Because like the PS3 it spends 2 seconds bringing up loads of options such as system settings, display settings etc aren't accessible whilst you're in game. So why are they there? And it's just that all the themes I paid money for previously are now dead, because you can hardly see them with that giant silver plate thing taking up the entire bottom half of the screen. So the quality background I had on the old dashboard is now un-viewable. It was a picture of a Lamborghini Gallardo SE I took at Nurburgring so all I can see is the **** looking Nissan Skyline that was parked behind it. The new themes that have been released such as that "Night" theme are tacky. It's just very chincy with all the giant pictures of the games everywhere that take ages to scroll through rather than just simple words in a list that I can read through in seconds. We should have been able to choose whether we wanted it or not. It's a bit like selling a car to someone and then turning up 2 years later and spraying it a completely different colour that they don't want. To then be told if you don't like it, "Tough". That's my review of it. Take it as you might, but i'm generally very open minded about how other people will receive it etc. Edited November 20, 2008 by tom_hargreaves

tom_hargreaves
Which they can get for 15 quid as opposed to 80 because they have no option. The 8 way chat is awesome. But that should have been released 2 years ago.
pingpongpo
You can put games onto your HDD? How does that work if and when you lend it to your mates?
Arch
You can put games onto your HDD? How does that work if and when you lend it to your mates? Still needs the disc in, as a 'key' apparently. You can't put old Xbox games on there either.
RobGTi
The first time I started up Halo after the new update it said something about not installing the game onto the HDD because it was slow, and something about my mates would take the piss out of me (as if they wouldnt for playing Halo, and getting beaten by a load of kids!) Is this true (the slow part )? It would be good to stop the noise from the DVD drive!
RacingRed
Is this true (the slow part )? It would be good to stop the noise from the DVD drive! Yeah its true. Bungie have specifically stated in a press release that you shouldn't install Halo 3 to the HDD. The issue stems from the fact that the game already caches data on the HDD to decrease load times. If the game has been saved to the drive then it still performs the cache, and thus the is having to read data from the drive and then write it to another part of the drive through the same drive head.
