Waylander
1. The main reason I need pro for my Windows XP set up is that it needs to be part of my work Active Directory - you cannot do that with Home. Also, you get some extra stuff with pro. Summary here: Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: Windows XP Home Edition vs. Professional Edition, What's the difference?2. Oh yes it's far more involved than that Copy the Win XP Pro CD to a second partition on the Netbook and run setup - you'll have the option to upgrade Home to Pro. 3. Hmmm. You could get loads of different answers on this. Mine is setup for 40Gb WinXP, 40Gb Win 7, and the rest data (80Gb). You'll also have a small 'RECOVERY' partition from the Samsung install. The Samsung utilities are actually pretty good and they're handy if you need to recover without a CD drive, so I've left mine on. Now, if you look at those partitions though.... Size - Used- Free WinXP: 40Gb - 12Gb - 28Gb Win7: 40Gb - 15Gb - 25Gb You could make XP & Win 7 smaller if you wanted to. Mine above include a full install of Office Ultimate, Visio, and Project. In effect there's a fair bit of wasted space on my install. Then again I don't hold any 'active' data on my netbook - it gets used for testing & travelling. 4. You have a choice, although remember it uses the newer BootMgr method of booting than the traditional Boot.ini. It'll default to Win 7 but you can choose the other XP installation. Excellent thanks mate. I might try 25gb 25gb for OS. I also have Office Pro from work so will probably stick that on too. I guess I will see how I get on with XP Home to start with and if there is any problem I can always upgrade from the CD to Pro. [final - for now:p] dumb question: does Win7 d/l as an Iso? If so I take it I will either have to use an isobuster or else burn to disc; copy disc contents across and then run the installer?
Mac
Win 7 is an ISO however the public beta program has finished now, so you won't be able to download it officially. Also, the public beta keys have expired so you'll no longer be able to use them.

Mac
Well, it depends how long you want it to work for Public beta gets public beta keys, and they'll stay active until 1st August. Private beta (I.e. build 7018+) get private keys and they're monitored for activations. Any that are deemed to have 'leaked' are blocked and you're machine will just randomly go into limp mode (cut down functionality). If you find the original BETA ISO on Bit torrent etc. then the public beta key won't work to my knowledge. However we know a way around that don't we That's what we've been told anyways, I haven't tested it. Edited March 1, 2009 by Mac
Waylander
Aha, got you old Fruity. Yes as MS inconveniently stopped the Public Beta programme before I got my netbook [should arrive by Friday+++] I have gotten it [iso] from an online server. I have also decided to bite the bullet and get a blooming external drive. Couldn't be bothered with the hassle of working out how to install Office 2007 without it Tax Man can pick up part of the bill I have figured I will go 3 partitions: C: 25gb [XP] D: 25gb [W7] E: Data - the rest

Mac
Kingston one should, the other one won't - it's the wrong speed and also 2 x 1Gb. You want 1 x 2Gb.

putz
Just done the 2GB upgrade, thanks for all the info guys! My next problem... I have 110GB in C: and 30GB in D: How can I merge them together so all the hard drive capacity is in the C: Drive? I tried 'Partition Magic' but just get a constant error message that the drive letters cannot be found/recognised. Will any of the Samsung S\W let me do this? I can do it easily on my other Vista laptop but the menu options seem different in XP? (I arent exactlt a PC expert in case you couldnt tell!) putz
Thanks, I had a quick Google for it. Is it easy to download+use? I'm worried about destroying Windows and making the computer never work again! Can it be used without burning to a CD and booting from it? This sounds complicated!! Ideally I want to download it to my hard-drive © and then use it to add C+D together making a larger C drive? Can it do this? Any chance of a few tips? (I am a PC novice!) Waylander
It is VERY easy to use. download it, burn it to disk, slap it into an external dvdrom and boot from the dvdrom. It loads itself, you do simple point and click and it does the magic
putz
Sweet, thanks for the heads up. I will have a bash tomorrow.
gizze
I have been using an NC20 over the last few days and really like it. Wanted a slightly bigger screen as an app I use is 1280x800 so no scrolling to get all the info in. Really pleased with it and have to say I have been using it at home too instead of the macbook pro, just need to get used to the keyboard really, this is nearly full sized but I think it is because the keys on the left go right to the edge that I end up using S when I want A. Got just under 6 hours use from it with the back light on 3 which is pretty good.
