Just out of interest I just tried the config. tool and specced up as close as possible to the R32 that I currently have.

It came out at just over £36.5k which is only £7.5k more than I paid for my R32 new in 2006. It'll take a lot of miles to recover that by the better fuel economy and lower road tax :roflmao:

And no doubt VW will have their usual annual price rise early 2010 as well and also not sure if when VAT goes back up to 17.5% if that will put the price up as well. Just as well we're not in a recession :ffs:

Im shocked by Volkswagen`s pricing, was seriously thinking it would come in at £26k for the Golf. :o

For me anything over £30k is just too much for a small hatchback, but that`s due to my personal preference.

I do like the R Golf as a car though and will probably take a test drive if given the chance...... but I could never part with my MK4. :cool: If I had the money in a ideal world I would buy one and still keep the MK4.

Use the Golf R for daily use due to cheaper running costs and keep the MK4 mint as possible.

Eitherway If I see a Golf R on the roads, the driver will get respect from me, as long as I get it back.......

Dunno when they'll appear in the UK but Oli has found out that basically the 3 door starts @ £28,930 in manual form and goes up to £30,820 in 5 door DSG. This is without the extra options.

The Recaro option in leather for a 5-door adds £3,325!

People are doubtless going to mutter things about buying S3's and used RS4's etc for the same money but whereas I think it's very expensive, buying a car isn't just about money but just as much about what suits your lifestyle and needs mixed with simply whether it excites you or not to drive.

Maybe so BUT It will have to be a hell of a lot better to drive than the S3 to justify the larger price (~4K), low spec and lower badge than the S3, and i just cannot see it. I wait and see but i think people who are ordering before even trying it are simply barmy.

Again, it's subjective, Snoopy. The latest R is bound to stir desire and emotion and get people wanting to own VW hottest model.

B'Jeezers, this is one expensive beast. Spec'd one as close to my current R32 as I could and it was 7 grand more! Stick Recaros in and this thing will be over 40k. I can't understand the pricing, that's treading on the toes of some very interesting competition. MIght as well throw another 10k at it and look at a TT-RS.

Still want one of course........

I'll re-phrase the question - what is it about VW selling a Mk6 2.0 T with AWD that'll make the value of Mk4 and Mk5 R32s retain or increase in value?

:grin: Well I feel that the true hardcore Volkswageners go into two groups, ones who are for the V6 and ones who are not. I can remember that a lot of the members on the R32 forums when out and rushed to buy the last of the V6`s due to VW`s move to use the 2.0T block.

Prices have already gone up and have been doing so albeit in small increments. Check out glasses guide prices. The prices really took a knock when we had the fuel crisis and as the markets crashed.

I dont class the 2.0T are a direct replacement to the R32, its a new direction with a new logo etc. The originals have the potential to become classic`s in years to come.......

Anyways leave me alone, I dont care as I`ve got mine :grin:

I'm inclined to agree. The 6 pot was always something a little special IMO and could demand the prestige price tag. This new direction with the R just seems to be an anni. Ed. with an R badge, a very expensive R badge.

Although it does have 4WD

It's an S3 in a Golf body +++

....In my opinion that's a good thing - I much prefer the looks of the Golf to the currently available S3.

RS3 Sportback with S-tronic would be a different matter, but so would the cost.

Similarly either a Golf or Audi 3-series would be very attractive with the 2.5T 5-cyl engine. But again the costs would be on par or pro rata with the new Golf R.

I really dont think I am prepared to pay that much for something which is essentially the same car, but probably slightly worse build quality.

Out of interest, my Mk 4 R32 cost brand new £22,340 (sad, but I can remember the figure!) in 2003.

Using an online RPI calculator, that should be £26,600 6 years later. So the base 'R' model has increased at double the rate of inflation over the last 6 years. Obviously VW dont do recessions.

Not sure I can justify £35k for a Golf, albeit a very nice one.

Isn't it essentially the same car but very different? Probably slightly worse build quality? Probably slightly? Does that really matter?

But you justified it for a S3? Is the general concensus about this car really a fair one?

It certainly makes the new Seat Leon Cupra R, with the same 265bhp engine at around £22k seem like good value albeit there's no Haldex.

If they had just kept the price similar or within £1k of the MKV it would have been a blinder. IIRC that was around £24k base for manual and £25.5k base for DSG

The MKVI is supposed to be significantly cheaper to build as well.
