Attempted burglary of non-joy

Came home tonight to the news that 3 guys had just tried to break in to my flat at Five o'clock in the evening!

The front door to the block isn't the most secure so that was bypassed pretty easily with the crowbar they'd brought with them, but thankfully my badgering of the gf has been worth it as they couldn't get through the deadlock on our flat door. As it was causing to much trouble and making too much noise they scarpered just in time before my neighbours were alerted and just glimpsed them jumping into their car - didn't spot a plate though.

Happy they couldn't get in, but can't think how much they could have got away with in broad daylight. Mainly I'm thankful she wasn't home yet as we never lock the dead lock if we're in unless we're off to bed. Might change that in future. Measured up for the new door which will be changed tomorrow morning along with the new locks as it's a bit mullered.

Just sitting waiting for the coppers to show up and dust for finger prints etc. How long do they usually take? Been a couple of hours now, and I'm really hankering for the few beers in my fridge...

cheers guys +++ There's a meeting at the end of the month so will be drawing up quotes for some top notch locks for the front entry doors.

Sorry to hear about yours Jim, comparatively, I got off extremely lightly.

Think I'll give up on the plod coming this evening. Might take the door up to the station when it's been replaced so they can take prints when they're ready.

I had a busy day yesterday. Police went and dusted for finger prints (didn't find any), they asked some random questions about whether I had enemies etc. as burglaries don't happen in the day if they want to rob you, only if they want to hurt you. Well, there's more chance of me being in if they try when I'm not at work, like in the evening, I'd say! Anyway, they also mentioned they were following up on 9 other burglaries yesterday - Isn't London great?

I think the reason they came straight to us is that students live on the ground floor and the other gff is an old couple who are never out. Next stop is ours.

Got a new door with some nice new locks and hopefully I can start to forget about this little episode.

Glad your getting things sorted Matt, smashing doors is not exactly opportunist is it? Out of interest do you have a 'Trades' buttton for the mornings to allow the posty in?

I know there has been a some break-ins on my development, where they have done a few flats at at time, suspected the Cleaner was letting them in so they banned them from the block.

Definitely not opportunists, the crowbar marks on both the front door and my door are self evident.

There isn't a trades button, I get buzzed every couple of weeks by the cleaner at the weekend and I think the rest of the time the old boy downstairs gets to let the postie in. There're a few older residents and by stereotype they are the more nosey ones, so in that respect, we do ok.

To restore some confidence and peace of mind I would install a simple CCTV system. A tiny camera by the door would put all but the most determined off and should't set you back much either. Even just one of those CCTV type monitoring systems like you can buy in argos should do the trick. Any would be robbers wouldn't know if it records or not. Small money for big peace of mind imo.

  • 2 weeks later...
We were burgled and had cars nicked two weeks ago tonight. Plod was here within 30 minutes of my call and SOCO within 2 hours. I wager there are no prints etc on your door either!

Its bloody rife round Manchester at the moment.

It happened to me in Cheadle 2 years ago (got the R32 and brand new Cooper S Conv stolen) then a few weeks later it happened to my sister in Didsbury (golf GTI).

Business partner has just said his best mate got done in Sale on Thu 10th Sept and they got 2 Audis (TT and A6 I think).

It really pi55es me off, as the impact it has on your life is huge and I am sure if the police put as much effort into catching the stolen cars as they do into speed cameras, something could be done.

And when they catch the f**kers who did it, make sure they give a sentence that will deter others - not encourage more of them!
