Hopsta Posted October 1, 2009 Report Share Posted October 1, 2009 A friend of mine has had a PS3 since day dot and it's now decided to thrown a wobbly giving them the equivalent to the Xbox ring of death. Does that mean the HDD is nakered or is there another culprit? Assume that its just a standard SATA drive, so can you still access the data via a PC? He borrowed a heat gun and blasted the joints. There is a guide somewhere on what to do. Reckons his works fine again now. Sony are charging £160 to do this afaik!! Sony only offer a refurb unit with 3 months warranty for £128. Pah bet Sony have engineered these things to blow up after a pre-defined period of time. I would be too..... :mad: my brothers launch unit only failed a few weeks prior to mine failing. But unlike Asda, John Lewis offered him a good will gesture of 50% off a new PS3 Slim .I got diddly squat so had to shell out for a new PS3. The red light of death is usually a faulty HDD but if its not, then its off to SONY! They were offering a 2nd hand recon unit with 3 months warranty for £128. Something which I was unhappy about. My main problem is that I use my PS3 for everything, Freeview PVR, Music, Movies and games..... its my hub so I just had to get one ASAP. Bought a 250GB PS3 Slim, it doesnt look as expensive (gloss finish) but it hell of a lot smaller (33%) and is very quiet compared to the original unit. Downside is I have no memory card slots and only 2 USB ports!! :mad: I ended up paying for Argos extended warranty this time..... can`t be doing with shelling out for another PS3 within the next 3 years! Surely they should last longer than 3 years, I`ve done some digging around and it seems it could be the thermal heat compound which has worn away and causing the CPU to pop apparently its a weak design. I`m going to complete dismantle my old PS3 soon and find out the root cause..... so far ive taken it apart to recover the dvd movie I was watching with it hung and switched itself off at! Grrrrr I did have a backup of my old PS3 but it said that some items may not be restored as the back was from a older PS3 so I didnt bother, dont play much games anyway so will reinstall them and backup my new one. Overall I`m annoyed that its gone pop but mine was used very heavily on a daily basis for freeview etc, was only a matter of time the heat compound weakened. Tipex Posted December 31, 2009 Report Share Posted December 31, 2009 My launch console still works fine, the main worry if it failed, would be that the newer consoles don't have the backward compatibility of the original launch console, so you can't play PS and PS2 games on them any more. Never put it in a TV cabinet or anything like that to try and keep it as cool as possible, although I've always upgraded my Playstation's in the past to the slim versions eventually so would be an excuss for the wife for me to get the new Slim one if it did pack up! Riz Posted January 2, 2010 Report Share Posted January 2, 2010 Just make sure you backup any important data... even if your PlayStation3 (original 60GB) died the 60GB hdd wont be recognised in a new slim PlayStation3. Grrrrrrr. Ensure you are getting plenty of cool air into the PlayStation3, I still think its a weakness in the design and that all original PlayStation3`s will suffer this doom soon! Your right but its a heat related problem, mine was well ventilated and always in its upright position as that was proven to be the best method and mine still died.... it was never moved or dropped etc.Have a search on youtube for YLOD fix...... its not a big task to repair it, requires some new thermal paste and some surgery on it All the launch consoles will eventually suffer this fate, some sooner rather than later thats all.... its just a question of when...... unless SONY used some sub-standard thermal paste on a small portion of the launch consoles..... mine, my brothers and my cousins have all suffered this fate.... all were launch consoles bought from different outlets. Im in the same boat as you, my son has a habit of switching it on and I hear it a few hours later and it sounds like its ready to take off So how do you back it up ? Riz hi riz, upright is WORST ...... the best thermal position for ps3 is sitting horizontally with an inch or so space under it. this allows the air to be drawn through the console via the hottest part which is around the left rear section! if you do this, you'll notice the fan speed reduces even when playing games constantly (eg 24/7!) sitting it vertically means the hottest part of the ps3 will be at the bottom......the heat will rise over the components and higher chance of failure. as pointed out, overall far less reliability issues than x360. i'd say the only design issue with original one from a thermal pov is the feet are too small, so not enough ventilation space under the unit. sit it on a a couple of toblerone bars or similar and you'll notice its quieter.
