Scotty Posted October 6, 2009 Report Share Posted October 6, 2009 When I had my 2009 car I didn't have the tints and the dimming worked great. I was particularly pleased as I went for the electric folding and dimming mirrors and they worked well too. When I ordered my MY2010 car I added the tints. Basically because all three dimming mirrors work off the sensor on the interior mirror and this is inside the car and hence gets less light due to the tints, the mirrors don't dip as often as they used to or should. The isn't a problem on the interior one as if less light gets through then I don't need it to dip but it does mean the exteriors don't dip when they should. After speaking to Audi UK and then getting a technician to check it out, I've just been contacted by Audi to tell me they'll refund the cost of the mirrors. I'd have preferred it all working but it seems to be a design flaw so this is about the best I could reasonably expect. If you're considering these options please consider this implication especially as the mirrors have more than trebled in price since the latest brochure came out. I will have to see how much the door mirrors now dip when driving at night. The funny thing is i used to moan about the door mirrors dipping too much and i couldn't make out what car was behind, so this might actually work in my favour! Also it could be perceived that mine works fine also. i.e. if there's a really bright light behind then they will dim. It's just that they're not dimming at the same point as in a car with no tints. Maybe it's only because of having the same car with and without tints that it's been noticed. People would probably just think it comes in a bit late otherwise. There are two sensors in the internal mirror, one facing forwards and the other backwards, I guess the difference between the levels of light detected is used to calculate the amount of dimming required. No idea if there are other sensors in the side mirrors as there is nothing obvious visible. The dimming does not appear to switch on and off, at least I've not seen the transition, so I assume that it's a process that occurs gradually as the light levels vary. Wizbit Posted October 27, 2009 Report Share Posted October 27, 2009 Now the clocks have changed I have driven in the dark quite a bit and even with my tints, the door mirrors dip just fine when I have bright lights behind me so all seems to be working with no issues at all from the tints. It is possible to adjust the sensitivity of the light sensor via Vagcom - maybe the factory tint cars have a different sensitivity set to non-tinted. Care to share the info? The Audi tech at my dealer interrogated it and said it's not configurable and ever Vag-com expert I've so far found on the web has said it's not configurable. Audi techs mostly only can do what their VAS shows them - so if it isn't offered on there they don't know about it... that's why it's possible to do tweaks with VAG-COM that dealers say are "impossible". Davef Posted November 9, 2009 Report Share Posted November 9, 2009 (edited) In fairness I hadn't clocked the fact your car is a B8, but as Dave says there is likely to be a similar way to adjust it to the B7. I've certainly accessed this controller in my car (but can't remember what the value is set to). If only I had a fiver for every time audi say it can't be done!
