DTC vs DSC: What's the difference?

So the M3 has DSC and the 320d loaner I'm smoking about in at the moment has a button labelled DTC.

In the current greasy conditions I'm quite enjoying finding drive and not chirping, sliding, shimmying around at the slightest hint of power. However last night I thought I'd give it a little cheeky provocaton at a T-junction and before I knew it I was at the most improbable angle and utterly sideways (in a 30 zone, somewhat embarassing ) and far, far more than the M3 allows with traction on. I had the feeling that it wasn't going to step in and catch it either...

Is it that DTC is actually only Traction Control and not Stability? Seems hard to believe stability isn't standard on a modern BMW...?

If its a few years old then I think your right that it doesn't have 'full' DSC, current models do though.

You only got the full DSC on a 6 cylinder model in the past so, braking on cruise control, brake wiping at speed etc. and not stability control either only traction control.

I think virtually all new cars have stability control now but they aren't all equal.+++

Just look and it does have DSC but not DSC+

So won't have, Brake Drying, Fade compensation Pre Tensioning, hill start and soft stop.

Neither of which will have made a difference to what happened, maybe its just the narrower rubber vs reaction time of the DSC?

Didn't realise there was DSC+

I'm guessing I have that as I have hill start. Haven't really noticed the other stuff - what's soft stop? I thought I did that anyway as I'm such a good driver.

As for last night, just weird. You can be utterly stupid and stamp on the throttle mid corner in the wet in the M3 and get no more than a foot's worth of slide before the DSC (when fully ON) brings everything swifly into line. Last night I was at almost 45 deg between two traffic islands. That's a new one for me :roflmao:

So the M3 is really helping with your driving style then :blah:

DTC-Dynamic Traction Control is for use in conditions such as snow and slush covered roads. When activated it will give maximum forward traction but will limit stability.

DSC-Driving Stability Control will prevent the driving wheels from losing traction when pulling away from rest or under acceleration. It will reduce engine output and apply the brakes to individual wheels when it recognises unstable driving conditions.

To deactivate DSC press the DTC button for at least 3 seconds-both DTC and DSC are deactivated.

To activate DTC press the DTC button and DTC will be lit in the instrument cluster.

Hope this helps-it certainly helped me keep going through the winter weather..+++

CJ92 thats right ish, my understand is....

DSC is the full on mode, it will help prevent the car going into understeer and oversteer either by braking wheels, reducing power etc. This mode will also cut power and brake the rear wheels if they loss traction.

Pressing DTC actually allows more slip, this can then generate more traction as the traction control comes in later. However it does mean that when moving in snow you have less stability, so really should only be used to get you moving. It can also be used to allow a bit more fun in dry conditions by allowing you to get the tail out or lose a little traction but ultimately traction control will still kick in.

Pressing for a few seconds to get the ! on the dash and you have nothing, no stability or traction control you are on your own and you skill or lack there off. +++

I think you are bang on the money CarMad.I often drive with both DTC and DSC off which does helps you apply max attention and can make for a more entertaining drive.

However,as you correctly state, if you were to lose it DSC will still kick in.;)
