billy2shots
Anyone heard anything about this? Save The Nürburgring! Sorry jumped the gun, maybe not close but in a bit of trouble. Edited November 13, 2010 by billy2shots
Mook
I don't think this is any different to the whole Donington debacle. As a country, Germany will never let the Ring close - it brings too much tourist revenue in. Most of the issues are around the GP circuit and the entertainment complex and don't forget that the state still owns the whole place - they let it out to this new co. If the trading co goes down, I can see companies like Mercedes and others in a consortium taking it on. Since the whole ents complex was built, I've not even been to it. Not sure if I'm a typical visitor though
Tipex
I've wandered around the new complex a few times, last year it was not finished, so didn't think much of the fact it seemed so barren, but this year it's all meant to be finished and up and running, yet the place is still empty. I don't just mean empty of people, there's just nothing there, it's all concrete open space, the shop is tiny given the size of the place, and nothing was open, the museum is still the same basically, and not really very exciting, I just don't get why they've done it the way they have. The roller coaster isn't enough to attract theme park visitors, the shopping isn't enough to attract shoppers, the museum is only going to get a bit of walk in trade from people who are already there. Sadly Mook, I think you are the typical visitor, other than race day's, who's going to go there? people like you and me, who would rather spend our money on track time, than visiting an empty complex. I think they've got it very very wrong, and the prices for laps, and the whole 'ring card' thing are not helping, I can see the state taking back control before too long. NeilB
Both the major German tracks (Nurburgring and Hockenheim) have been struggling to turn a profit over the past couple of years, following improvements/changes to the track and paying Bernie to host the F1 events. In fact the blue riband German GP at Hockenheim this year only managed to turn a profit of just 120k.
Scotty
You mean the Nurburgring F1 track or the Nordschleife are struggling or is it all lumped together? The Nordschleife must make money.
NeilB
As far as I'm aware the Nurburgring and Nordschleife tracks come under the same management. That is why the GP is alternated between Hockenheim and Nurburgring, as there simply isn't enough money to host an event at each venue every year. Mook
Nürburgring GmbH have a lease on the GP track and the Nordschleife.
theduisbergkid
I can only echo Tipex's comments, I was left thoroughly underwhelmed by the new 'Plaza', we went 'off peak' and couldn't get on the karting, the shop was tiny and overpriced (although some berk spent €39 on a plastic Nurburgring toaster as I recall) and I don't know what has happened to the Museum. I wonder if they were trying to make the place more family friendly ? In any case, I suspect the likes of Mook are the typical customer, a few laps of the 'ring, a night or two at one of the Hotels, steak Argentine and Weissbier. And the obligatory puking in a layby somewhere of course. At €22 for a single lap it isn't cheap, but I'm sure they could charge more as the 'ring itself (On TF days) is always busy. I wouldn't read too much into this report.
