malagus Posted January 11, 2011 Report Share Posted January 11, 2011 A casual browse on autotrader gives you this: 2004 CITROEN C2 1.6i 16v GT which by the time you buy and with some haggling will be the sort of example you can get. Regularly maintained (they are mechanically quite simple and euro car parts do the bits cheap) I think that will do 70-80k miles with very little hassle. Booster Posted January 12, 2011 Report Share Posted January 12, 2011 Our eldest daughter has an 05 Mini Cooper and it has been faultless. Not a single issue with it (well, if you forget her knocking the wing mirror off twice and collecting the mirrors off a Maserati Quattroporte and a brand new Astra).However, it's only done 31,000 miles and has the Cherished Mini thingy pack and all that gubbins, so it has been well looked after. I can't praise it highly enough. I don't necessarily agree that fuel economy is 'crap' but I can see Boosters point. However, it's a 1.6 litre small nippy car that handles like it is on rails and encourages you to go for it. It's an absolute joy to drive. I don't think you'd get 40 to the gallon out of it. MINI claim 42 mpg or something like that but I think 33-35 is more to be expected. It's a lot less than that if I drive it though. However - there is major upside. They still hold value incredibly well and far better than anything else in the sector that I have seen (Booster can correct me I'm wrong on that as he'll know much more than me, but from what I've seen they still sell very strongly). Correct. They are very, very good on the residuals. Even 52 plates seem to have stabilised around the £4500/£5k mark as a minimum for an ok one. Don't think you would get anything but a CAT C or D write off for your budget I'm afraid unless it has been to the moon and back. I still reckon that you would be lucky to see 30mpg from one though! If you've got big feet/ shoes the pedals will drive you nuts as they're tiny and so close together, but I imagine a Rallye version would be too much fun for these things niggles to get in the way. Rather than just ploughing straight on through the hedge/wall like all the other Audis? As for the Saxo & 106, the Saxo just has the wrong image for me, so I'd never touch one, the 106 whilst I'm sure is great fun, would be to unrefined for me, I couldn't live with something that basic and fragile feeling any more. As usual you are all barking up the wrong tree, heres where you need to spend your money....something reliable, it can sit a few folks and carry crap and its acutally quick even when its loaded up. Thats a little Yaris based car with a 130HP 1.3 16V Turbo!!!! Full Uk Spec car and is in budget. 0-60 7.9s, A/C, Remote locking etc. Failing that if you want to go down the top-down route why not get a Copen? TSN holy bible (Top Gear) even likes it either the 1.3 or 800 Turbo. You can get an early one, plenty of kit, contrasting interior you wont loose much depreciation wise. Rock solid car thats fun to hoon around and im 6ft and i managed to get in on a few occasions. No more gay then a Ford Ka and a lot nicer on the inside then an old frog! Doesn't set the world on fire, until you throw it around a bit, then it's very predictable for a FWD car. Steering's a bit wooden but that's to be expected. 60+ mpg. I'd wholeheartedly agree with that Mook. As for the comment about them being not very reliable, sorry, but that's utter rubbish, you'd be seriously unlucky to buy one that gives you trouble. I wouldn't have one mind, but only because I'd look ridiculous inside one, if I could fit in the first place! My mums had a string of polo's that have all been unreliable, however my mrs Polo (R reg, knackered, >100k mls) hasn't really given us any trouble, but it is utterly sh1t as no power steering/windows etc, 3 cylinder 1.0 engine is aweful too. New one is great and build quality is good as well. My mums has been super unreliable, it's not the 1.4 tdi mind, it's a 1.0 which I think is still 3 cylinder, but it's forever needing coil packs among other things, it's ok to drive and feels a lot more solid compared to our old Polo, but I think it's got the wrong engine. Its her 3rd Polo now, and they've all been unreliable, I don't know why she still buys them, I think it's 4 years old now and she's talking about buying a new one, I'm trying to steer her towards a Kia or Hyundai with a proper warranty as she just sees cars as white goods. If you touch one it'd crumble into a million pieces. According to NCAP in a frontal impact it destroys your legs if you're in it. You're probably better off being hit by it than being in it!
