Will - welcome to the forum mate! You'll not find a better place for info re the R32...

I was chatting to a guy just a couple of weeks ago who had swapped his M3 for a new R32 and he absolutely loves it! whilst he misses the straight line speed (AMD should be able to cure this wink.gif)he much prefered the handling characteristics in wintery weather and was very happy with the car overall. My housemate has an M3 and, whilst I think it's a fantastic car, I still never fail to grin when I start up the R32...

And guys- what's with all the bickering....c'mon now... slap.gif

Hi JT,

yes I think the 4wd will come in very handy, the beemer can be a tad "over-enthusiastic" sometimes, and to be honest that in itself can get tiring if you drive a fair bit in your job, which I have to. Subject to a testdrive (which I think will be a formality), Im jumping on board beerchug.gif

I think I will spend the first few months getting used to it, and then think about a visit to AmD cool.gif Ive used them before with a 911C2, (does Geoff still own the place?), and was very happy with the results. Ive already spoken to my insurers, and they have said it will be a negligible rise of around 5%, so things look good from that perspective.

cheers

Will,

Done 600miles in my R32 now having come from an RX-7 Twin Turbo.

You're going to find it understeers a bit and that the pull, particularly above 100mph isn't quite the same.

It's a serious amount of fun though and just flies around roundabouts and out of T-junctions in a very different way to RWD.

My RX-7 was an M3 killer, but I'd say up to around 100mph I prefer the R32. Above that it feels a little light and twitchy by comparison

But I love the fact that in 10 years time the R32 will be a classic the fact that the interior is way beyond anything in its class.

Being an ex MK IV Golf owner, and having driven the R32, I would say, without doubt (imo of course) that the S3 has the best interior in the hot hatch class.

Dunc

PS go easy on Lodders chaps! grin.gif

I wish to apologise for my outburst a couple of days ago. And to welcome Will onboard. beerchug.gif

I love my R32 but I have a real problem with cars in the fact that however good it is I get bored after 3mths and I must admit on my list of cars to own before I die I have a scooby, M3, 911, Evo, etc so what should I go for next FIREdevil.gif

Hello Will, this is the first time i've posted on here but have been reading through all the R32 posts over the last few days. I've had my R32 now for just over 3 months and have clocked up almost 6000 miles. The car still puts a smile on my face every time I drive it or look at it for that matter.

I say go for it and you'll see what I mean!!!

By the way hi to everyone else too. Photo to follow.

impressions...

very nice. must say the first thing I noticed was the throttle response. last golf I owned (around '95) was a vr6, and hadnt driven one since. this car is a *marked* improvement in just about every area that I can remember. i suppose being able to map acceleration via software rather than mechanically provides for much better characteristics. I liked it cool.gif

handling was a joy. felt comfortable at speed straight away, gave me lots of confidence - more confidence round wet bends than I have in the m3 for sure.

acceleration, albeit not in the same ballpark, was enjoyable and certainly not uninspiring. im certain with a few more ponies it will be even more fun.

fit and finish was fine, seats nice and grippy. couple of minor niggles with a few squeaks coming from the dash and sunroof, but I guess what car doesnt squeak somewhere ?

stereo system was rather poor. ok, I can live with that short term, so not a problem.

not sure I'll be able to put golf clubs in the boot without putting the single seat down, but again, a minor annoyance.

all in all, I was very impressed. Now the search is on to find one. That in itself is prooving to be no mean feat.

Anyone see a new blue vr32 at a dealer - SHOUT !!!

cheers

Guys, listen to Lodders, he's had more cars than most of you put together so he knows a thing or two.

Nice as the R32 is, it is in no way comparable to the Em drei and above 100mph is where you can feel the real difference.

Where the R32 will start to struggle the M will start to stretch its legs and pull away, AMD/Miltek-modded or not.

Not coming on here to stir, just giving Lodders a big up. And if for financial reasons you need to change to an R32 then I think there ain't a car that would better for the price but dont fool yourself into thinking its a substitute for an M3.

Really, it must have had some serious mods, what were they?

Well of course, this is all subjective and my humble opinion. I've been driving an E46 M3 for the past 1.5yrs, so its the most recent car I can use to compare.

As (to me) there is no value in hypothesis or speculation unless you have owned/had use of the cars you are comparing, what is the use in making any statements about either ? (ie. what a journo writes doesn't mean I have to agree)

In the real world, given a long straight I would agree. The M3 comes alive at 3 figures. However, in this gatso-infested land we now live in, I would contest that I was actually able to enjoy more fun with the point-to-point characteristics offered by the r32, than I am in my M3. Now, If I were a rally god, or a professional driver, it may well be that 3-figure power slides around wet country bends were second nature to me, however I (like the majority of us) am not. It's in this crucial area where I think the R32 could possibly deliver more of the enjoyment factor through its 4wd sure-footedness (as Im sure could a number of 4wd cars).

I dont think Im fooling myself in the slightest (if you're directing that statement at me). I think the the R32 could possibly make a perfect substitute. After all, it could be that the M3 itself a substitute. Its not a CSL, and its not a repmobile with a dubious bodykit. I bought it because I had a 911C2 for 4yrs and was getting tired with the relatively small space/storage, lack of 4 proper seats (a pain when friends stayover) and a yearning for something new. Its provided me with an immense amount of fun, and except for its achilles heel (the [censored] brakes), I cant fault it. But, the R32 isnt a substitute. Its a great car in a completely seperate class. In fact its quite flattering to say the R32 could even be considered a substitute to the M3.

As to an RX-7 being an M3 killer, I could quite happily believe that statement. After all, there's hardly any ponies left in the M3's normally aspirated lump (what a beautiful piece of engineering I must say), but the RX-7 (iirc) had twin turbo's and a myriad of tuning options to take it waaaay beyond 350hp. But then, whats the point of arguing that a modified car is faster than a non-modified car ? That seems all a bit playground to me !
