The perfect overtake

Disagree.

When I was learning to drive in my mums 1.0L Polo the craft of overtaking was timing the run up, the dive out, nip in etc.

I felt more satisfaction from "nailing" some of them than when I've been able to whip past with just a squeeze of throttle.

p.s. The opening post really reinforces the stereotypical IAM driver i.e. I AM. It seems the don't teach class or underplaying things.

Last week I had a lovely chav in a battered 306 with more dents than BHP execute what he must've thought was a great overtake, judging by the grin on his face as he trudged past me. Thing was, it was on a blind corner on double lines.

Every time I drive the alfa (burnt orange 147) I think it seems to attract dickheads with a point to prove. When the boys with proper performance cars roll up, they are either content to stick to my pace (i'm not a sunday driver but nor do I go everywhere like i'm sat on a wasp nest) or to wait for a proper overtaking opportunity.

Having been an IAM driver myself, I couldn't disagree more. :coffee:

Mind you, they're not overly great at teaching good driving either. I realised (too late) that they're more for teaching bad drivers how not to be a complete f*cking liability.

You don't agree that it reflects the stereotypical IAM driver? Perhaps coz you were* one you can't see it.

* - Once you've passed IAM then you're qualified for life....or do you mean you let your membership lapse?

p.s. I'm RoSPA (bike) hence I'm obliged to take the pi55 outta IAM ;)

I agree. I'm not sure if some perceive it as a "Get Out of Jail" card. i.e. they expect plod to be more leniant on them. In some cases it's true. If you're just pressing on and simply going over the limit but there's no hazards etc, they now that you know what you're doing and there's more chance they will either have a quiet word or just let you get on with it......but you don't need a sticker for that. They can tell by how you do it.

It can work the other way around. If Plod pull you, then they maybe think you should know better since you've had the training. I know one guy who got pulled on his bike for doing something silly. The first thing plod said to him was "Did you buy that bike with the IAM sticker already on it?" :roflmao:

To me, the stereotypical IAM driver wouldn't dare embark on an overtake, safe or otherwise, and quite often is the type of driver that sticks mechanically to the "system" because they lack any natural aptitude or car sympathy in their driving. The self righteousness isn't an attractive trait either. :coffee:

I've let my membership lapse. I don't particularly agree you should be 'qualified' for life either - people soon drop back into bad habits.

Ah, that explains it then.

From the type of people I see outside supermarkets, the RoSPA (car) lot aren't much different to IAM - generally retired Daily Mail readers who like to think they're superior in some way.

Having said all that, I don't think we should criticise IAM and RoSPA per se (just the stereotype members  ) - what they're trying to do is a positive thing, and they tend to attract drivers who wouldn't spend the money on private tuition.
