I've got to say, however, that the new 5 is a handsome beast.

I agree, but I think they're very colour sensitive. There is a bronze one in our street, debadged boggy basic model with horrid alloys - and it looks awful.

Have to agree, it's a pretty thing but colour sensitive.

Only thing I would say is it's a far chunk bigger than the E90... but it's just par course with new cars... always a bit bigger.

I think the size is a good point - I bet I'm not the only one to have seen the rear of one from a distance and thought '7 series'.

My mate has a black one and I think it loses a lot of the subtle detail on it.

My bro gets a White one next week though and the White ones I have seen so far look very nice.

I also thought 7 series at first glance, then as I got closer I realised it was the new 5, I reckon if you stuck a chrome strip across the back of the old 5, you be hard pushed to tell the difference!

Do like it though.

I think it is an immediately much better looking car than the outgoing 5 ever was, although I do think the M5 looks very nice.

It just has a much classier all-round look to it for me. I saw a black one this morning and I can see what Maxyboy meant about it removing subtle detail in the lines of the car, but the other thing that struck me about this car was it was yet another with hideous boggy basic wheels on it. I can understand fleet cars having standard wheels for reps etc, but why anyone buying a new 5 series privately wouldn't spend £600-800 on the nice wheels is beyond me. They completely change the look of the car.

Followed one in Edinburgh the other day - once I'd realise it was a new 5-Series, I too was very impressed with way the new model looks. Have a chum with an existing 530d and he's looking at a straight change but the Options List is huge and it could be a very expensive change for him !!

I'll also join the new 5 series fan club though. It is a handsome car, seems better proprtioned than the 7.

Tosh, I'd tell your mate to test drive a 520d. It's had rave reviews across the board, to the extent that I've seen more than one article question whether the 530d is actually worth the extra dosh.

I've read those reviews too and they've certainly tweaked a hell of a lot of power out of that engine now.

184 bhp 380 Nm of torque from a 1995cc engine is quite something......but it still doesn't match the 30d and it's an expensive car when you consider it starts at £29,430!

The 530d starts at £38,790. These are both the prices for the SE versions too, not the much higher spec M Sport variants.

However, the 530d has 245hp and 540Nm of torque so the on-the-roll driving experience should be very different with that torque variance.

The 535d shows amazing figures nowadays though with 300 hp and 600 Nm of torque - and 0-62 in 5.7s!

I can vouch for the new 245bhp 30d engine, it's a corker in the X5 and it's still running in! Nice sound track too, which is where the 20d always suffers.

Weren't they going to fit the 23d engine in the 5 series?

The new twin power engines being launched look pretty special too.

The only negative review I've seen of the new 5 was that the steering has lost it's feel, and now feels numb, and disconnected, compared to the old 5, shame and I hope BMW sort it out.

That was a complaint on the previous model if you spec'd active steering. Could be the tester had a new one with active steering having driven a conventional version of the previous car.

The 525d is a detuned 530d isn't it, as in the E60/61, with the 6 cylinder engine :confused:. AFAIK there is no 523d...yet

I did look (briefly...) at a 520d Touring as I fancy an estate car again. It's ridiculously expensive though, by the time you add a few options. A Merc E350 CDI Avantgarde estate is only a few k more, to a similar spec, and much better value IMO, but it doesn't look as nice

Can't believe I'm typing this, BUT..... I am a fan of the new 5.

There said it. Confessed.

It does look better proportioned than the 7, but I'd have to save the difference up to get the 6 cyl diesel engine. A 4 cyl in that just doesn't sound right - and it will ahve competition with the new 2.2d Jag XF!
