To say a RWD Beemer is comparable with a 4WD Audi in the snow is just absolute tosh.............a large portion of:

Who's saying they are ? I had an S3 in the snow and it was okay, but suffered from ground clearance... and WAS "better" than the 118d...

Sorry folks, you can be a feckin Scandinavian "Stig" if you want,

"Never mind the Bollocks"

I agree with the hightlighted comment......Winter tyres make a massive difference and several XF owners managed to survive the Winter Snow...but rwd on summer rubber=disaster.....Not sure how a quattro shod with summer rubber would cope with snow....but I can say with some certainty it will have better traction than any rwd car....and I`v driven a few rwd in adverse conditions....and they are nothing short of scary.

Last winter in my RS4 I easily got to where my wife works (between 4-6 inches of snow on the slope between their office and the motorway) and got her and a colleague home - took me 4 hours to cover 10 miles because of all the numpties spinning wheels and rotating sideways had partially blocked every road. I had standard summer tyres, Goodyear F1 Assymmetric, I saw the TC/ESP light come once twice.

Yet I've already said none of my cars have ever had winter tyres on and I'm no different to the average driver - yet I've managed without issue.

If RWD is the big issue so many think it is, why are there so many BMW's etc on the road that most people have no problems with?

Incidentally, of course a 4WD car will do better than an equivalent RWD car in the hands of the same driver - at no point have I tried to say differently, hence pointing to the fact it is, in most cases, down to the driver. The simple fact is that whilst I'm no better than the average driver....there are a shitload of appalling drivers in the UK.

Driving in snowy conditions or on a skidpan, in a RWD car, should be part of the driving test. It'll keep some of the lunatics off the road.

.

But they do...everyone knows rwd cars are a nightmare in the snow...Even the Germans....by law you have to have Winter Rubber fitted in Germany during the Winter.....The only reason I bought another one was because I had the old Defender.....On fresh un-compacted snow you can just about get moving...but given an incline or compacted/frozen snow/ice...your stuck....Just re-read Daz`s link....I think you might be on you own on this one......Anyway it`s Summer...well sort of...I`am sure the rwd/snow debate will re-ignite in 6 months time.

ps...I do agree that some people don`t have clue how to drive in snow...and most UK motorists have probably never even heard of Winter tyres.....It was absolute chaos in North Wales when it snowed just before last Christmas...fortunately many roads have wide grass verges and I along with many other 4x4 drivers took to the verge to pass columns of stranded motorists.....I saw several Mercs and BMW`s that had been abandoned in the middle if the road.

You have`t by any chance put a few bags of cement in the boot to aid traction.Lol

But I'm not, there are ample references on here and in this very thread to people saying they agree it is mostly the driver! I give in (much like **** drivers do in the snow).:roflmao:

Actually, I've just remembered something.

You drive a Jag. Enough said. :roflmao::bike:

Lol...I would`t dare take it out in the snow....I`v also owned BMW`s as well...however the scariest car I`v ever driven in snow was a Lexus is200...truly terrifing at times....Other than that it was a great car.

All cars have to have the winter tyres, not just RWD ones, even Quattro Audi's have to be fitted with winter tyres!

I don't agree that RWD cars are a nightmare in the snow, I'll agree that they are easier to get stuck, but I personally feel the most important factor is the driver rather than the car.

MrMe is obviously really good at driving slow and steady, he probably even smokes a pipe while he does it! :P

First thing about that is that it looks much better in white than any other colour I have seen.

Second thing is that the gear stick is the tackiest thing I have seen in a very long time.

Third thing is that it is all very positive - and I'm very cynical....it's all a bit too gushy for me. Something not quite right from what is a relatively new car review site that only started publishing reviews 6 months ago and the domain itself was only bought a year ago...not sure what authority can be put on that?

Such cynicism MrMe, you will be saying AutoCar & Express give unbiased reviews purely because they are old kids on the block so to speak...........I think not

I am beginning to love the RS3.simply because it appears everyone on this site is at pains to knock it at every opportunity, whilst not ever having a bad word to say about the beemer 1......I will personally reserve my opinion, money and deposit till I have actually driven one, and as Azure says lets give it half a chance...........at least before steaming in at every opportunity with negative posts...............

I've not said a bad word about the M1 because this is about the RS3 - but for the record I'm sure it rides like a pig and goes like a train.

It'll give feedback to die for but the interior won't be as well finished as the Audi. The dealers, on the whole, will treat you like a human instead of a piece of gutter-tripe.

The options will be as silly as those of Audi. The car will be stupidly priced. There, I think that's a fair assessment and I don't even need to drive one to know any of it.

I've said I think it looks good in white, and I am giving it half a chance...but the fact is that the website that review is on has half of its reviews written by a former hardware reviewer of PC Pro. In fact he's the one who owns the domain too. So I think it is reasonable to say it isn't quite the authority I was hoping for and that an EVO test of the cars head to head, in the UK, will be what most take their opinions from...

Cars are so subjective though aren't they. What one person might love another hates, anyone can have an opinion but it's what the buyer of the car thinks that is most important.

So some will buy it without test driving it, so what if they like most of it and can afford the £40k risk it will be a dud for them, its there call.

I personally thinks it's expensive but what Audis are cheap these days, pretty much none are what you would call good value, but it does have a gem of an engine that makes a cracking noise, for many that alone will be enough regardless of the handling.

Very true.

Personally, I don't know why anyone would buy an RS3 over a Golf R, that's a far better package for the money, and from one point of view, the R is 99% the car the RS3 is, it only lacks that one cylinder, but in some ways, it's a superior car, as the RS3 will not match the feedback or feel of the R, and the R's isn't class leading, the engine note just doesn't justify it for me I'm afraid.
