Hmm, I'm not sure if I'm honest, does the RS3 have haldex 4wd?

It's really easy with all the VAG cars - if it's a transverse engine, it's Haldex (e.g. Golf, A3, S3 etc), if it's longitudinal, it's Torsen (e.g. RS4, RS6 etc.) +++

Impreza Cossie would be quicker off the line and round a track and round twisties - Evo did a really good comparison.

Ok, so what is an normal A4 quattro? Longitudinal engine like a passat (old shape), but i thought they were haldex? Maybe I got that wrong.

So, what does that make the RS3? Most A3's are transverse, and hence haldex, is the RS3 also transverse? I wouldn't have thought the engine would fit, and Audi usually put 5 pot engines in longitudinally, along with most other engines, hence the understeer issue.

I'm nit having a dig at the RS3 here by the way, genuinely interested.

The 5 pot Volvo lump fits in the RS, to give you a comparison, but they're both a tight squeeze!

Ah yes of course, I'd forgotten about that, I was thinking of the original legendary Audi 5 pot, always fitted longitudinally.

What (if anything) does the new 5 pot have in common with the ubiquitous Audi 5 pot of old? Other than the obvious 5 cylinders, is it a completely new engine?

Completely different. Same lump that's in the TT RS +++

Bottom end is from VW 5 pot in the USA, and head is off one side of the V10 Lambo engine, so I am reliably informed, or then again it could be total horsepoo, but I do recall having various discussions about it with Simon VAG tech,when the TTRS first came out, and he is pretty up to speed on that sort of thing

Don't get me wrong, one thing we all agree on is that it's a great engine, but to suggest it has anything in common with the Lambo engine is simply laughable.

You can't take the head off one side of a V engine, and fit it to an in-line engine, the design is totally different, for one thing the head on an in line engine sits horizontally (in most applications), whereas on a V engine, it will be significantly slanted, so the oil ways wouldn't drain correctly among other things.

So is it the same engine as in a V5 Golf? they've obviously done a lot of work to it if it is!

I should have qualified that comment, I was not talking in a literal sense, as in they whipped off the V10 Lambo head and literally strapped it to the block, more a case of they used the original performance design of the lambo head, and incorporated it in the new head design for the five pot, this might well be marketing guff, but the chap I mentioned, really does know his stuff where VAG's are concerned, and is highly regarded at what he does

I think a lot of Audi fanboys will have placed orders as soon as the books opened, as they've been waiting so long for the RS3, then once the reviews came in, and they saw the car in the flesh, realised they'd been short changed by Audi and cancelled.

I'm sure it's a good car overall, and to those who enjoy it, I hope they remain happy with it, but it doesn't deserve the RS badge in my opinion, and I think that's why after wetting their pants when it was announced, so many have backed out.

I would agree with some of those comments, but I dont really think the press reviews have much relevance, as anytrue car enthusiast is only to aware, media reviews on the whole are a load of twaddle,and I personally have never taken any notice of them, as its my money not theirs, and its my opinion not theirs that actually counts.

I view the whole sorry saga in this fashion:

RS Badging? Mmmh we could have a huge debate on that, but in essence purely subjective, and open to personal interpretation, as to what actually constitutes an "RS" vehicle, so i'll pass on that.

True RS fans are going to order their car in the "Exclusive" colour offered, in this case Suzuka Grey.

Therefore Audi have managed to p1ss off the majority of their hard core RS buyers, with the farce in relation to supply and delivery of this particular colour, which we all know has nothing to do with colour, and more to do with production volumes,production capacity & allocation

The other issue is the packaging, five door and auto, also the fitment of odd tyre sizes, and no modification of the rear arches (see singh RS6 below) which would have definitely transformed the stance of the car asthetically,all this IMHO was a huge mistake, but understandable, as they are gearing up for the new A3 platform, which will emerge in three door format, and therefore had to take out of commission production capacity, for the old model to make way for the new.

So all in all,not Audi's finest hour, or come to that for customers: weeks,months,years (yes years FFS!) of waiting for a car to appear, so no wonder people have said feck it, as part of buying a LTD model, is the one of expectation and anticipation, Audi in this instance has killed that stone dead

I think some people do attach too much importance to media reviews - but you should only need to read reviews of the same car in different publications to realise how subjective they can be.

I doubt a good or bad review would swing a decision for me one way or the other, but I can't deny a good review in EVO would give me a positive feeling about it.

Yes would tend to agree with that, specifically in regards to EVO, as they do tend to illustrate the differences in views, given by their various testers, currently they are running an RS3 and a 1M, and the drivers both like their respective cars a lot, in preference to each others, human nature I guess.

The other thing is, they are and were the only car mag, I seem to recall, who gave the S3 8P a very positive review, and still rate it in there top four or so hatchbacks, every other mag including JC, slagged it off completely, which is utter tosh, if you have actually owned one, my missus has had two, and loves the model, I drive hers occassionally, so have a direct comparison with my Golf R, and they are both excellent cars, with there own distinct traits, S3 more comfy on a long journey, Golf R slightly more hardcore ride wise and more balanced and precise steering and set up (No great surprise there) both with bags of go, and practicality, with survivable fuel consumption to boot, in fact the latest EVO shootout involving the S3 recommended buying an S3 or a Golf R in preference to an RS3, will that change my decision? Umm no, but Audis fecking about ultimately might, if something turns up with "That" engine under the bonnet who knows? VW get your finger out and announce a LTD R 2.5 as a run out for the outgoing MK6 please!

There again the new A3 might be so good, I think sod it, and wait for the S3 version to appear, which might be fairly soon if recent model releases are anything to go by, we'll see, all to play for currently, and lets face it,Audi really have p1ssed off a good deal off their "core" customers in relation to this particular car

I had an S3 before current car and g/f has got a new TT.

I must admit, the whole sorry RS3 saga would put a big question mark over buying any new Audi
