Tipex
I remember when the R32 first came out, one of my mates bought a DBP 3 door, it was fantastic, had the optional (Konig?) seats in and everything. Although he looks after his cars, he also likes to give them a sound thrashing, when he picked it up, he got the salesman to hold his phone to the exhaust, and called me, all I could hear was that V6 bouncing off the limiter. He drove it straight to my house, and we went out in it, ragging it down country lanes, we went over a hump back bridge at about 90mph, and it took off, every warning light lit up on the dash like a christmas tree, feck that was fun, what a car. Cuprabob
I still love the R32 and would have another in a heartbeat although I prefer the MKV although I appreciate the original MK4. Not a dig at Riz, but i'm also one of the few owners who spent more time driving it than "detailing" it. R32 owners don't just wash them :-) Best 84k miles of my life but dread to think how much I spent on fuel over the 5 years:eek:
garcon magnifique
Personally I always thought the Mk4 looked a bit dumpy, although I've never been in one let alone driven one so no idea what they were like dynamically. I did develop a soft spot for the Mk5 R32, mainly after chasing two of them around Scotland. It's a car full of character - which to me is mighty rare for a VW - and it made a glorious noise, especially Miltek assisted. And although TP27 and RS32 may not agree, I definitely think they looked more 'purposeful' absolutely caked in 1000 miles or so of Scottish road grime. The Mk6 Golf R is, I think, a natural progression. It's a shame to lose a couple of cylinders, but that is a change borne out of necessity. It's still a good car, and I think they got the looks right too. Plus, it seems to have gotten better write ups from the motoring press than the Mk5 ever did. It looked expensive when it came out, but looking at the competition now it doesn't seem so bad.
TP27
And although TP27 and RS32 may not agree, I definitely think they looked more 'purposeful' absolutely caked in 1000 miles or so of Scottish road grime. Interesting Thread - the two main 'issues' I had with moving to the new Golf R was the loss of two cylinders and the 'lack' of V6 exhaust note. Six months in and 4,500 miles to the better, I have to admit that I really don't miss these elements at all. Having had a MkVI R32 and the MKV R32, both were totally different cars to own. The MkVI R22 was the closest thing to a go-kart that you could buy at the time and the MkV built on this but became more grown up. The new Golf R on the other hand is a totally different kettle of fish. Whilst it's not as quick off the mark as the MKV R32 felt, top end when you're booting it, it's a massively quicker and more refined motor to enjoy ! garcon magnifique
I can't even explain it very well - I just never really liked the looks of the Mk4. Admittedly, from so much I've read here and elsewhere, the Mk4 R32 was about much more than looks.
TP27
I assume you mean MKIV and not MKVI :-) Apologies - new variant then from here on in :- Mk4 R32 Mk5 R32 Mk6 Golf R Sorted !!! :znalika:

Mook
The Romans didn't get to Scotland because the Border Rievers stopped the feckers. The Scotsmen were all hiding behind us

Having studied Latin and Greek at school, I should know better than to make a typo like this on TSN !!
