BMW have had 4wd almost as long as Audi, they never offered it in the UK though, aside from a brief period in the early 90's, I had a 525iX Sport touring, which was a fantastic car.

They've offer the 'X' pack aka 4wd for donkeys years in the rest of the world, so Audi don't 'do' 4wd any better than anyone else.

I'm well aware that they've offered it abroad for years. But in the same volume? Doubt it.

Well, Audi should have the advantage of knowing their 4wd inside out and then a bit more. Whilst BMW have had 4wd for a while, nothing like the mass that Audi have had for the time they've had it.

Ah you see that would be where you are wrong, BMW outsell Audi and in fact every other manufacturer for 4wd across the range. We don't see them in the UK as until recently it wasn't what the brand was offering, but on the continent BMW sell more 4wd cars than everyone else. +++

Stunning bit of kit, when it goes 4WD optional next year too along with the other BMW favourties Audi will have no perceived advantage will they ?

I guess that all depends on what the new RS 6 comes with, but overall I think BMW make a better product then Audi so your probably right. The new M5 is my new favourite car. +++

I know about BMW's 4wd products, and the intention to bring 4wd options to the UK, but will that include 4wd variants of any of the M cars? I would be surprised - surely to do the job properly (which M Division always do) they would have to completely re-engineer the car's chassis to accommodate a 4wd drive train? Creating a 4wd M5 would be an altogether different proposition to simply slapping a 4wd system into a 520d.

On holiday and bored, I Googled the 4 wheel drive sales for Audi and BMW.

Audi outsold BMW in 2010 as it happens.

quattro cars accounted for ~38% of Audi's sales, representing some 437,792 vehicles.

Not that I care either way :P

As Carmad says above, BMW traditionally outsell Audi on 4wd products.

BMW's are already RWD, so converting to 4wd wouldn't be too much effort, the prop shaft and rear diff etc are already there, and the chassis for an M5 is the same as for a 5 series, which is already available in LHD markets in 4wd, so I don't think it'd be too much of a challenge to offer a 4wd M5, I don't think it'll happen though, personally I think the M5 should remain RWD.

I'd agree with that. In Switzerland you see Audi's all over the place and hardly any BMW's, 4wd or not.

Well under the sales figures I found for 2010 your total would be 415,000 approx.

Whilst BMW is almost 440,000 for xdrive vehicles.

25% of all cars are xdrive and then the X models make up the rest. In some markets almost 50% of vehicles sold are SUV/SAV as BMW calls it thus why the total is higher than some may think.

From what I cold find anyway, I found the link to the original figures last time I was question on the accuracy but can't find it this time, I blame google.

I spent all of 5 minutes looking (I was bored, but not that bored) and found this on various sites:

In 2010, Audi once again sold more vehicles with all-wheel-drive than any other premium manufacturer. Audi ended up producing 437,792 vehicles with its quattro all-wheel-drive system last year. In the year in which Audi celebrated ’30 years of quattro,’ around 38 percent of all cars produced worldwide were equipped with the all-wheel drive technology.

The most popular Audi model with quattro all-wheel-drive in 2010 was the Audi Q5, of which 155,025 units were built. In the months ahead, the brand will further expand its all-wheel drive lineup in the SUV segment with the Audi Q5 hybrid quattro and the upcoming Q3.

I'm sure you know best though :)

Is that marketing spiel though? Are they differentiating between 4wd and awd?

Like I said a while back, I don't really care either way :D

I was curious following the statement "that would be where you are wrong, BMW outsell Audi and in fact every other manufacturer for 4wd across the range" so I did a quick a quick Google for Audi sales figures and found statement I posted.

edit - which is taken from Audi's own press release https://www.audi-mediaservices.com/publish/ms/content/en/public/pressemitteilungen/2011/03/24/audi_most_successful.standard.gid-oeffentlichkeit.html

I think the manufactures can spin it either way. One of the pages I found said that the BMW X1 outsold the Q5 and it's a dog of a car for BMW.

I know what I've read and provided the link to the press release with BMW quoting the statement I made last time, I've got nothing to prove a drive an Audi, have you taken your pedantic pills today by any chance?
