Anyone got a new 2.0tdi A6?????

I have sold my Mercedes E320cdi estate, it was Brabus tuned to 272bhp and used to return 36mpg average, and on a run would see 48mpg if taking it easy.

We had an F11 520 touring for a while but found it a bit soulless so sold it and kept the E Class.

However, now sold the E Class and the X1 is going so want one estate.

Have taken the new E350cdi out, and doing my regular 80 mile round trip it returned 47mpg, very impressive, that is a good 5 or 6 mpg better than my old e320 did it in, and only 3-6 mpg behind the 520d touring.

The Merc has their new 7g tronic plus 'box and BMW has their latest 8 speed auto.

Now I have had a lovely 2.0tdi S-Line A6 avant this weekend, I was worried that going back to the Audi it would feel a bit harsh, and maybe a bit hollow, but thought with the superb MPG figures and interior this would be a compromise worth making.

I have been seriously impressed with the comfort, even on 19's it is leaps and bounds about my old 3.2fsi SE avant, the whole car feels more solid but also more nimble.

Steering is still bordering on laughable but it is a 2 litre family cruiser and does it well.

Well I say it does it well, the only thing that is stopping me pull the trigger is the MPG, I can't even hit 40mpg in it! The BMW never dropped below 40, well that is a lie, coming out of London on a Friday night it was showing 37mpg after a 2 hour crawl to the M11 after the DIS was reset.

But doing the above journey that I got 47mpg from the E350cdi from and sometimes 55mpg from the 520d the A6 is showing 36.4! And I am really feathering it.

The long term average on the DIS over 9000 miles is showing 33mpg.

I love the car, but at the moment it is around 25% behind the E350cdi and 33% behind the 520d in real world figures.

So is it just a duff car or what?

I would expect these new cars to struggle to drop below 40mpg even round town and certainly hit 40mpg after a reset on the dual at 70mph??

Any ideas???

Don't know what use this A6 has had prior to you being loaned it, but it may be clearing the DPF in which case it will be using more diesel than usual. I have a C6 A6 and get over 40mpg all the time (unless in traffic) the new one is meant to be more economical. Did find my A6 needed to loosen up a bit and mpg improved significantly over the first 5k miles.

Just typed a long reply and hit the big blue button, bugger!!!

Long story short.

Spoke to a mate with the 2010 2.0tdi, he said the consumption is crap!!

He gets pretty much 35 average and 45 on a steady run.

Audi told him everyone complains and 45mpg on these is good.

I got 29average from my 3.2fsi a6 quattro avant with a tiptronic box, and 36mpg on a brick run.

With £4k audi uk contribution and then dealer discount on top I am still considering one, loved the rest of it, just a shame the consumption is so crap!

It is strange, the official figures are some of the best as well.

Also, the Audi website is just terrible!!

I can't even find the prices for the A6 avant anywhere.

I want to see the specs for the 2.0 vs 3.0 etc. but can't see any proper specs anywhere?

Well with laughable steering, a crap Audi website and rubbish economy then I admire you for still persisting to find out about them.:roflmao:

I can't comment on the 2.0 but my (new to me) 2007 3.0 ltr Quattro gives me about 34mpg on a very short 9 mile trip to work and the best I've had out of it was 45mpg the other weekend when I went from Cambridgeshire to Norfolk and I thought that was pretty good to be honest. So I would have thought that with the new frugal 2.0 ltr would have been at least equal to that but would have hoped to have beaten those figures by some considerable margin.

I must admit that before settling on the my existing A6 I did look at a new 2.0 ltr A6 (Avant) - mainly because Audi were really pushing how economical it was but for other reasons I decided to go for an older version saloon.

Specs and prices for the A6 Avant here by the way.;)

Specifications < A6 Avant < A6 < Models < Audi UK

The steering may have been a bit harsh, it just doesn't seem to feed anything back through the road. It feels quite weighty compared with my 3.2fsi though, but it is frustrating that while the car gets so much right they still can't get any feed back in the steering still.

I think that is the problem, the whole point of a 2 litre, 4 cylinder diesel is to be economical, you sacrifice pace and refinement for decent economy, however, if I didn't get that I would be gutted.

Thanks for the link.

But the specifications section just tells me what sort of seats I get with SE or S Line etc.

I was hoping that they would tell me what engines it is offered in, what gearbox you get with each one, whether I can have the DSG 'box with a 2.0 Quattro or whether it is Tiptronic only, what the emissions are, and how much these cars are?

The A6 is not on the configurator either, so can't even work it out from that.

First page of the BMW 5 series specs show you this....

BMW UK

That is a good base for working out what is within budget etc.

Audi used to have the same.

Thank god it's not me!! I thought I was loosing it.

Where do I see what engines and gearboxes etc. are offered?

The page just tells me that there is a diesel, a petrol and a bi-turbo diesel, but not what size diesels.

Same with gearboxes, tells me there is a wonderful S Tronic gearbox but none of the cars listed on the used car section seem to be specced with it?

All very strange and seriously frustrating.

I must admit that I couldn't believe what you were saying - how on earth could Audi miss off the A6 configurator? Of course they couldn't!! THEY DID!!

Every other model is there except the A6, I have never noticed that before - could it be they don't want anyone to configure an A6 because of the imminent release of a new model? What other reason could there be?

I will have a look on there.

It may be missing at the moment as they are revising the prices. I sent my mate a text, he said S-Line spec is now only £1500 instead of £4k, but a slight increase on certain options, but also massive dealer contributions.

Could be around 20% discounts on new cars available.

We shall see!

I noticed the configurator was missing the A6 yesterday. Most odd.

That was while I was speccing an S5 and trying not to laugh out loud at the options list. I swear an Escort 1.3L used to have more standard kit. :P

Back to topic (ish), I guess it just goes to show that real world experience of the economy of these cars is far more important than the official figures. I can't help thinking manufacturers are tuning specifically for the (still very artificial) tests, even at the expense of real world economy.

It's partly to do with the tests always being done under 'optimum conditions'.

Conditions you'll never experience in real world driving.

However, it's not just that, it seems that the MPG reading in the A6's are actually pretty accurate, whereas 99% of other motorists are not getting anything like the MPG the cars computer is telling them they are, everyone seems to take that reading as gospel despite the somewhat optimistic nature of the computers, then when you sit them down with a few fuel receipts and work it out properly, they can be anything up to 10mpg optimistic, and almost without exception, all are at least 5 MPG optimistic.

This is all done from tests on many different marques and models over long periods of time.

My range display in the Galaxy is comical, if you have a full tank, it reckons you'll get 800 miles, which is hopelessly optimistic, even for a car that does a geniune 50 mpg around town, but when you get down to around 50 miles range, it'll drop like a stone, you can watch it ticking down, it'll go from 50 miles to 0 miles in a real 6 or 7 miles.

If it helps, the OBC in my E250CDI (7G+ and stop start always on) says that I am doing 48mpg across a tank. I'm not - it calculates to be 'just' 41; not bad, but way out - even less accurate than the DIS in the Audi

FWIW that's on mixed roads; my commute is only 15 miles but includes the A27 and its roundabouts. The petrol, manual A4 does a true 30ish on the same roads; an older generation 535d did 28.2 IIRC :o

Cheers Peter.

Well I have been offered a 60 plate 530d M-Sport Touring this morning, I know for a fact that I will get 38-48 mpg from this all day long.

It has the active stuff and sports auto transmission, along with all the toys, it was a £55,000 car 14 months ago, and is coming in less than an 11 plate 2.0tdi s-line avant, so makes sense.

If I could find an E250cdi or E350cdi estate with the latest 7g+ gearbox at the right price I would have one of them, or rather if I could find a dealer that would give me the right price for our X1.

You pleased with your E Class Peter?

The new model was released last year - no new model to be imminently released. It was there last week, I specced a new A6 up.....
