sushisushi
Hi Gang, I think I have one of the first B7 S4's out there. It's 1st Jan 2005. I'm the second owner. The previous owner stuck 137000 miles on it and kept it mint. I've done another 15k so it's up to a whopping 152000 miles and it's just like a new car to drive. As you can imagine with these miles it's been fairly pitted with stones and the like so it's time for a full front end respray. One other thing I don't like on the S4 is the nose. I think the late S line models with the non chrome surround looked better. So Ive giving it to a trusted VAG group paint guru to work his magic. Day one is complete and here's where we're at: Before, looks ok but close up it's a bit scruffy. Let's attack! Serious stone chips! I could hardly see the dents but they were there! I'll put some more pics up tomorrow / tues. Stay tuned.
JonC
The previous owner stuck 137000 miles on it and kept it mint Bar the fairly pitted front end resulting in said necessary respray You may want to consider hiding your plate details from images going forward - never can be too careful
Tipex
Honestly don't know why people worry about hiding plate details? It's not like it's a secret, it's on display for everyone to see on the car, and doesn't give any info about the cars location?

Tipex
But the plate is still on display for anyone who wants to know it, it's stuck to the car?
pingpongpo
Honestly don't know why people worry about hiding plate details? It's not like it's a secret, it's on display for everyone to see on the car, and doesn't give any info about the cars location? The thing is, if I was of a dubious background and had a car the same as that and lived in the Barnsley area you could see how it could get difficult for this chap if a load of speeding tickets dropped through his door. Tipex
But that could happen anyway, my point is, the plate is always on display, why does showing a pic of it make the car more vulnerable? You could see the car driving down the street, and write down the reg, then clone it if you were that way inclined.
SINGH
Well the forum member himself cannot be traced if his plate is hidden. For example, Tipex, you piss off Mr Me for example, if he has your reg, he can track you down. With the reg hidden, you are more or less untraceable. That is the only reason I can think of anyway. There was a guy on an RS forum threatening to kill me for exposing his clocked car, had he looked through my precious posts and found my reg, he could have obtained my details. A bit far fetched, I know.
JonC
had he looked through my precious posts and found my reg, he could have obtained my details How could he done that? Unless he had access to DVLA's database? BTW, RS6 Plus - stunning, lucky you. Any pics?
chasdrury
How could he done that? Unless he had access to DVLA's database? BTW, RS6 Plus - stunning, lucky you. Any pics? Anyone can get details from the DVLA for a fee - £5 or something.

JonC
No, you can't. Thats what I thought. Data protection et al.
Milo
You could register as a parking enforcement business and get them for a couple of quid On a slightly more serious note, I bet that loophole has been used on more than one occasion; someone obtaining details under the guise of parking enforcement when actually a mate has bunged them a drink to get the details. That's unless all these parking companies are run by 100% legit and honest, law abiding citizens who stick by the rules and guidelines 100%. Booster
No, you can't. Oh yes you can (in a pantomime styleee!) http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg/groups/dg_digitalassets/@dg/@en/@motor/documents/digitalasset/dg_065303.pdf
Tipex
It's not as simple as that, you have to prove you have reasonable requirement to access the information, the Data protection act applies to the DVLA as well as everyone else (even if they don't think it does). I can't think of many reasons they would offer the information to a member of the public without supporting evidence of an accident or similar. Jon you can obtain details using the link posted above, I think. You'll be sorry you asked for photos, I love whoring out photos of it. I've done a fair bit to it, downpipes/custom map etc... it dyno'd at 530 BHP and 844 NM of torque, just need fatter anti roll bars and bigger brakes next. Tipex
Surely having it painted in primer, and then taking it out of the spray booth, before applying the top coats is just asking for a paint reaction? It needs to be immaculately clean for decent lasting paint finish.
Paul
I can see Tipex's point ref the plate. It is on show all the time, but i guess if you wanted to clone a car, you would generally have to be in the right place at the right time to spot the correct match. However, if you post pics on the net with your plate, in my opinion it does make it easier to clone a car. The cloned car could be hundreds of miles away. The internet brings that info to your living room/mobile device etc. Thats why i have always removed my plates, and have asked the same of anyone posting pics on websites during meets/ etc. A couple of clicks, just might make them choose another car to clone.
