Mac
Personally, I think the TomTom app is ace - I use it all the time over my in-built BMW 'nav. The only other thing I've been using is the Google Maps turn by turn Nav that's with iOS 6. Must admit it's far better than I expected.
Tipex
Obviously us mere mortals don't have iOS 6 and the new maps app yet, so discounting that, it has to be the TomTom app, it is excellent and you won't need anything else. However, right now I'd wait for ios 6 and see what the new maps app is like.
Mac
Well you can get it for about 60 quid with an Apple dev account - that's cheaper than TomTom. No immortality required.
JonC
Navfree is a free app for the 4/4s, but if you're a regular user of SatNav, then it's not that great recognising some roads, but for the odd occasion, it's not bad.
