Golfer Posted August 1, 2012 Report Share Posted August 1, 2012 The combo that is interesting me is the 245bhp 4cyl turbo petrol 328i with the 8 speed auto 'box, owners are reporting averages of 33mpg and 40mpg on a run without taking it easy. One US owner did an average speed of 68mph over 400 miles and was showing 42mpg, and that is US gallons too, so near 50 UK? I think most owners of the new 330d seem to be reporting 40ish everyday and mid 50's on a steady run. New 330D engine not out yet mate+++ Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Interesting one that, because most diesels are made to be comfortable, good mpg etc. Modify one, though, only slightly and you can have some great fun. I trailed up to the Lakes this weekend, taking in some decent A, B and C roads in a Mk5 2 litre diesel, breathed on by Shark, with one mod - uprated anti-roll bars - and some decent new tyres (Continental ContiSport ContiContact Conti5 Contis - or something). Truly, I've never had so much fun in an (almost) standard car. Yes, the extra grunt makes a difference, but if you keep it in its sweet spot (between 3,000 and 4,000 rpm) then it pulls like a train the whole time. Yes, yes, I know it's not a BMW (topic of this thread), but you can have some serious fun - you just have to adopt your driving style to the car you're in. Back to BMWs, the E92 335d slushmatic (with added Shark) is great fun around Donington and Spa, and can happily keep up with an E46 M3 CS on the straights - as repeatedly proved by me Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Tipex Posted August 6, 2012 Report Share Posted August 6, 2012 I can see both sides of the argument to be honest, I love my Scooby engine on track, it just sings at higher RPM, similarly the 2.2 VTEC in an import Prelude I had sung too, and it liked to be worked hard, really enjoyable. Alternatively, I also like the day to day driving experience of modern turbo diesels, for when your not thrashing it, the easy torquey nature makes overtaking a breeze, and yes, as Mook says you can have fun in a diesel, it's just the fun runs out sooner when you run out of (usable) revs However, I don't care what anyone says, diesels sound sh1t, even V6/8 diesels sound rubbish, all of them, and for those moments when it matters, the sound of decent petrol engine makes petrol the only choice for something you 'want' to drive. Every year actually, however I had another great deal with "Listers" so went ahead and ordered.Got a great "Forward Valuation again" , so happy. I will not miss the 335D / 340D if they should come out, I am getting on a bit Older now so calming a bit. Not to say when the new M3 comes out........................... What do you think of it, given you have had some very nice BMWs.Mine was the first in the country ( 35D M Sport ) late last year, the car is very quick and gives 36 MPG all the time, driven conservatively 39/40MPG.It gives most sports cars a telling off and they just don't get it when I leave them behind. I have two sets of wheels ( which winters will fit the F31 touring ) 18" winters and 19" sports. I would post pictures but for some reason the "manage attachments" never completes !!!!!!!. OldSkoO1 Posted August 22, 2012 Report Share Posted August 22, 2012 That does look nice to be fair Apart from the spacing in the wheel arches which needs to be reduced (i assume that is an m-sport looking at the wheels), the bonnet is really weird, just cuts off before the lights (perhaps some ludicrous pedestrian safety requirements?) Definitely the right colour. No you are right, the pedestrian safety isn't ludicrous, I hadn't thought that through. The bonnet doesn't look right as it finishes before the lights with a straight cut line. Possibly as a result of pedestrian safety which i mean't was a slight overview from BMW, surely they could have finished what is a good looking car a little better on the bonnet.
