Busby
Awesome stuff mate Great to see Dylan on the S1000RR and your R1. If you come over he's welcome to take the RSV4 on a day somewhere - it would be the only time it ever got ridden properly His progression in the racing is fantastic too - is he too old to go for the Red Bull Rookies or KTM RC Cup? You'll be back in Europe with his racing at some point
Scotty
It's great to see his progression. Must be wonderful as his father to see it happening. Well played to both of you.
NewNiceMrMe
Fantastic. Brilliant to see how peoples kids come on in this type of thing! The scenery in that shot from the north tip of the island is stunning too. I do envy you for that. That offer of a go on Busby's RSV4 is a rather good one too. Had you noticed that he offered your son the ride, not you? Edited May 13, 2016 by NewNiceMrMe

Had you noticed that he offered your son the ride, not you? Its a nice spot that one in the picture. You ride in heavy woodland and bush for quite a few miles then round a bend and its one of those "Wow!!" moments... Its not at the north tip though.... This is the location and this is the route we took. Great ride. The far north is very remote and sparsely populated. The road was only fully tarmac-ed 4 years ago and the last petrol station is pretty much at the limit of my bikes range. I got back with half a litre left in the tank. It was a 3 day tour and the weather was awful on day 2 & 3 and its not what an R1 is all about but I loved it. We have some more trips planned to do the east, west and south tips of NZ in the next year or so. Hey James (Busby) , I'll have you know I have never crashed at a race track unlike my son... still keen ?... How are you getting on with that beaut any way ? Oh, and by the way MrMe, what ever happened to that plan to get a bike to do some touring ?
NewNiceMrMe
Oh, and by the way MrMe, what ever happened to that plan to get a bike to do some touring ? I still fancy doing it but life has a habit of getting in the way of even the best of plans! An R1200 GS Adventure would do me nicely but MrsMe is more keen on the Seychelles. Busby
Hey James (Busby) , I'll have you know I have never crashed at a race track unlike my son... still keen ?... How are you getting on with that beaut any way ? Ha ha You'd better go first then so that you're both guaranteed a go I reckon Dylan would give it a better work out than either of us that's for sure! I'd love to stand on the pit wall somewhere and hear it get an absolute hammering from someone who could really ride - the noise as it blasts by would be awesome. A friend who waits on his drive for me can hear me short shifting it as I get close to his house - well I say close, the 'crow flies distance' from where I am short shifting to his house is over 1.5 miles I haven't been out on it this year yet as I have tied up with things when the weather has been good recently. Hopefully the next few weeks will give opportunity for some gentle rides to get back into it. Are you still loving the R1? I've come to like the looks now and saw an R1M on the road this afternoon which looked utterly stunning. It didn't sound too shabby either!! I reckon the RF needs one as company in the garage! Mort
Yeah, still loving the R1. It is a deeply impressive bike. Even that trip up north, in foul weather and on badly surfaced twisty roads, it was good. Just turn down the throttle response and turn up the traction and get stuck in. It's also ballistically fast when you want it too. Mental on the road, great on track. Only bad point was the standard Bridgestone RS10s tyres. It ate two rears in 600km at the track. Worst tyre wear I have seen. I started using slicks on it and they're great. Having said all that, I am lusting after a proper road bike as a 2nd bike I can do some distance on without crucifying myself. NZ is a great place for touring and I feel I am missing out. I'll probably go for a old VFR800 cos they're cheap as chips and bloody good but I'm loving that Yamaha MT10 also. JonC
...but I'm loving that Yamaha MT10 also. Have you ridden one? I'm going to have a demo at the the MT Tour when it comes to Rykas in Box Hill. I have a MT09 and love the triple's sublime torque. I'm interested to see how the extra cylinder, weight and power translates to the road.

When the dealer gets a demo in I'll have a look. The cross plane engine is fabulous and would be perfect on a road focussed bike.. I like those MT09s too. I have a mate who is an experienced racer, mechanic and bikes salesman and he says the MT09 is the best road bike he has ever ridden. High praise... I'm looking forward to trying one at the demo day. The '09 is, as your pal says, phenomenal. The stock suspension lets it down though, other than than, utterly superb. I'm replacing the rear shock with a Nitron and having up front sorted with RaceTec internals.
Mort
Just thought I would update this thread with a few pics etc. Dylan is 18 now. Left school a couple a couple of months ago (good exam results, having a gap year, no job yet). Super-fit. He still has the R6 but his great love is racing the F4 150cc bike and is riding the NZ North Island championship. Its such a cool set of races as there are some great tracks in beautiful locations. Hard racing with a great clubs scene. I've been doing some photography for the club for the past few meetings so will add a few below. If anyone wants to keep up with the club on facebook jump on HERE One special event was a 2 hour endurance. He rode as part of a 2 man team with a mate who bought our previous bike and then modded it in to a ripper. They did very well with an 8th place (of 20+). These look like basic bikes (and many are) but some are pretty trick.... He also did his driving test so we got an MX5 as his first car. They are cheap and so is insurance here. We all love this car. Not the most mechanically/electrically sound car I have seen but we are enjoying fixing it and driving it... what a great car this is... just fantastic fun. I love it and I want one. We had some fun on my fave road... Lastly, this week I did a roadtrip to the East cape of NZ with a mate I went to uni with in London back in 1984. Stunning coastal scenery and fantastic roads (with no cops ) My bike is the ultimate combination of pleasure and pain. On the right road & circumstance, there is no other bike better. It is beyond epic. Alternately, after about 2-3 hours its f ucking murder. I came back yesterday determined to sell the bastard and get something kinder to my poor battered skeleton. Today I walked in to the garage and decided... no f ucking way. Anyway... a few pics from the trip for your viewing pleasure

NewNiceMrMe
Fabulous. The MX-5 remains the best drivers car I have ever owned. Loved mine. Shame I rolled it (this was 25 years ago!).
